New Cuban Restaurant in Buechel

by Terri Beam » Fri Oct 21, 2011 7:30 pm

If this has already been noted on the board, I apologize. I've not been able to keep up of late.

I spied this out of the corner of my eye the other day, so I did not catch the name. There is a new Cuban restaurant in Buechel, and in the grand Louisville tradition, it's located in what was many years ago a liquor store, and then Jade Dragon, and then a short-lived coffee shop. It's in the tiny building between Walgreen's and the motel near the corner of Bardstown Road and Watterson Trail.

They were closed on Sunday so no chance to pop in and check out their offerings.

That would be Las Palmas - they have been open for a while now and bill themselves as a Cuban Bakery and Cafe.

They are on Facebook : http://www.facebook.com/pages/Las-Palmas-Bakery/110554379051280

Haven't made it over there to try it yet, so I might have to wander over there tomorrow morning for a quick look-see and lunch. I keep forgetting to stop in and check it out, despite it being extremely close to home.

For clarification - I believe that Watterson Trail at Bardstown Road is closer to Fern Creek than Beuchel unless the corporate boundaries have changed.

Interesting point. Pedant alert: Neither is incorporated, both were unincorporated urban areas within the old Jefferson County, and now both are unincorporated neighborhoods within Louisville Metro.

The boundary point between them, though, is ... Watterson Trail! Fern Creek to the south, Buechel to the north. And, it's worth adding, DakShin and the Gordita Trailer are right there ...

I always refer to that area as the "DMZ" between Fern Creek and Beuchel.

I stopped by Las Palmas today a little before noon, and they were closed up tight. No lights on, the OPEN sign was off, and nothing else going on. Probably not a good sign.

Their facebook page said they were opening Saturday after 12:00 - so maybe not an issue after all.

I visited Las Palmas this afternoon and was pleased with the place. It’s small, with a relatively limited menu: a daily special, Cubanos and some other sandwiches, empanadas and other snacks, desserts and baked goods. There’s a cooler stocked with soft drinks, some of them Hispanic. The menu’s here:

The prices seem to be extremely reasonable. I had three decent-size empanadas and an iced tea for lunch, plus two ground beef pastelitos to go, and paid less than $8. The ground beef empanada was good, but the ham and cheese empanada was outstanding. (I haven’t tried the pastelitos yet.)

The woman working there said they’ve been open about a month, and they claim to be the only real Cuban bakery in town.

This place has apparently closed. I drove by a few times and it looked busy, but they didn't seem to keep regular hours. Always meant to stop in but never got around to it.
