Yes folks another great restaurant is coming to Louisville. The old Borders store will be an upscale restaurant run by Cordish, that great purveyor of ...

I'll just go ahead and predict that the City will be providing even more subsidies to these people.

And what exactly do they mean by upscale in the context of 4 Street Live? No bare midriffs?

Do we really need Cordish's help with getting people to go downtown?

I go downtown plenty, but it's never to a Cordish-owned establishment.

I wonder what this city gave Cordish to have them renovate Louisville Gardens?

I don't think so. Not in Louisville. The PNC Tower, a 30 STORY building, just sold for 77 million. Do you think the decrepid, crumbling, 6 story 4SL parking garage is worth anywhere close to even half that amount? There is a role for companies like Cordish, and they WERE the pioneers in developing downtown. Now what you have is a whole organic area developing around the arena, butchertown, and also NuLu, if these areas grow out and combine with Old Louisville and the lower Highlands, you have a heck of an urban area for a city with a MSA of 1.3 million.

I agree the city gives way too much to Cordish, but 4SL is so vital to downtown. Imagine what conventioners coming this week think of the city when they see a vacant Borders, two vacant restaurants at 4SL, and multiple vacant buildings up and down Muhammad Ali and Fourth St, in the heart of downtown. Louisville needs 4SL, and what it needs even more, is retail in her downtown. A Target, a TJ Maxx....Anything! If the city determines that Cordish cannot develop the Center City project, it is vital that they find someone who can, using a mix of national and local retailers. It is nice coming back to town and seeing the vitality of downtown has picked up, but it still has so far to go. That said, I agree....how many more upscale restaurants does downtown need before one can find a store to buy a shirt that is not "urban" styled.

The lack of any general retail downtown is a sore spot.
Unless you're in the market for wigs or FUBU type clothing there is nothing downtown.
I used to shop at the old Bacons quite a bit when I was working downtown and living in Old Louisville.

Hopefully that will change. The last time I was in town I was really impressed by the restaurants downtown...but the retail is really terrible. Among the ones which I thought were cutting edge were Hillbilly Tea, Doc Crow's, Blind Pig, and Harvest.

I could have sat here for several hours pondering a proper response to the original post and not have come up with a better reply than this. I'll grant you that I've only been here in The Ville for three years but I have yet to hear an argument against Cordish/4SL that would explain the erection this forum has for 4SL. "Byters" may not think much of this venue but I can PROMISE you that it is responsible for a fair share of the "vibrancy" downtown...To the extent that without it tourism and the convention trade would be seriously impacted. I'll bet someone something nice that when all things are taken into consideration that there has been a pretty substantial return on the Cordish investment... I'll even go out on a limb and make an uneducated speculative guess that without 4SL downtown L'ville would be nothing more than a (slightly) warmer version of Omaha.

Anyone remember the situation on Baxter Avenue prior to the opening of Fourth Street Live? The local establishments there were overrun by late-night partyers, and the city was fighting back with by-the-letter enforcement of zoning laws. 4SL opened and problem solved. World class cities have entertainment opportunities for multiple demographics; the bare midriff crowd need not fear that I will interfere with their enjoyment of this new venue.

As for those who have grief with Cordish for its insider dealings I suggest you visit one of their FAILED downtown revitalizations: Oklahoma City Riverwalk. We should be grateful that Fourth Street Live worked whether we participate or not.

Honestly, my biggest gripe with Fourth Street Live is simply the shutting down of a city street and enforcing their stupid dress code on it. For the businesses within it fine whatever, but on the street? C'mon.

And even worse on a policy level, turning over law enforcement on a public street to private security. That, folks, is a scary precedent.
