Starvin' Marvin's Country Kitchen

by Steve P » Tue Oct 11, 2011 5:49 pm

Wooooo-Hoooo...We got's us another place to et out here in Garage Logic. Starvin Marvin's Country Kitchen is now open just off I-71 at Exit 17 in beautiful downtown Buckner. Ya can't miss it, it's right next to the Thorton's. Stopped in for lunch today and it's "country" all right...Kinda like Cracker Barrel goes local. They have a 5.99 daily lunch special (today was a reasonable interpretation of a Philly Steak) and a daily dinner special (Monday night is $3.99 for a 1/3 pound hand pressed Angus Burger). The food was good, not great...The service adequate and the price was right...Lunch for 2 with tip was $20. Worth the drive outside the Watterson ? Probably not. A good place to eat if you are in our neck of the woods ?...You betcha.

Steve, I thought I'd heard that name before so I did a little searching online and it appears that it's a ch..ch...ch..... chain! It appears that most of them are located in smaller communities like the one in Buckner. I'm actually thinking there's also one off of I-64 somewhere between Louisville and the Frankfort exit. We've actually eaten there and as you said it was respectable.

Mark,

I'm thinkin' ch-ch-chain might be a bit of a reach. The only other location I could find is in Smithfield KY on Jericho Rd. They do have 3 or 4 Facebook pages, including one where they misspelled "Country" (Counrty) and another with a photo of half their menu.... :? ...Yeah, I'm thinkin' this place should do OK out here in Garage Logic. It's no Verbena Cafe or Shady Lane but if you're into the ol' meat and three sides thing it should serve a purpose. It seems like this place will be to "country cooking" what "Steve-O's Italian Kitchen is to "Italian"...

The Starvin' Marvin chain is part of Speedway/Superamerica empire.

Definitely not one and the same...Here's the "logo" for Starvin Marvin's Country Kitchen...Don't know that I've ever seen anything remotely similar in a Speedway Convenience store. I'm thinkin' one serves hot dogs on a roller grill and the other serves regular diner style food.

I do loves me some Speedway/SA coffee though.

Good point. One the other hand some corporate lawyer might take one look at that logo, mutter something like "Bless their little heart" and call it good. :P

Starvin' Marvin used to be off exit 28 in Pendleton (in what appears to be a stepping stone location for country fried restaurants like this). They were there for a year or two after that other similar restaurant moved to Oldham County and then promptly shut down. Hopefully Marvin will have a stronger run.

That would be "Mom's"...probably the sorriest in a string of sorry restaurants that have tried to make a go of it in that O.C. location (Son of a Sailor, Mom's, Colorado Mike's BBQ, one or two others). Yeah, not sure about the whole Starvin' Marvin thing...they were doing a really good lunch business yesterday but only time will tell.

Dropped by Starvin' Marvin for Sunday dinner, earlier this afternoon. If you're seeking four-star cuisine, coupled with a refined atmosphere, then look elsewhere. They feature a basic, unpretentious menu of "comfort food" in a relaxed, no-frills setting. Sundays include a fried chicken buffet, that features mashed potates, green beans, baked apples, and biscuits - very tasty. It's "Cracker Barrel" without all the window dressing and merchandising. Located off I-71, at Exit 17 (Buckner) in the small strip center next to Thornton's (where Cornerstone Cafe was located).
