Scotty's Village Market at Norton Commons

by Ellen P » Tue Oct 11, 2011 8:29 am

Someone is opening a deli/produce market at Norton Commons. One of the new buildings. Garage doors. Awnings. I don't know who is involved. I was hoping Paul's would put a market near us, but this works - I hope. It's not opened yet.
(When I see Scotty and Market together I think of the Scotty's near my grandmother's in the Original Highlands. Loved that little store. My father knew Scott from the 'old' city school system. I remember he played Santa Claus a few times.)

Scott Deitrich! I had occasion to cover the school board for a while when I was a new reporter at The Louisville Times and he was approaching retirement. I wrote some kind of story about a minor scandal he was involved in (old Santa wasn't quite as jolly in his public life :? ), and he growled, "Any publicity is good publicity as long as I get my name in the paper." He lost the next election.

Actually, I wasn't aware that Norton Commons had a mayor (other than the mayor of Louisville, of which Norton Commons is a part). But now that I think about it, if Norton Commons had a mayor, it would almost certainly be a Disney-style audio-animatronic robot.

Oh, wait ...

In answer to some of the comments above, there is no mayor of Norton Commons. I am aware that people call me Mayor Jerry and I am flattered. It is only because I am out there and very active and more aware than most about what is going on. I am also very passionate about where I live and excited about its present and future growth. We've gone from 5 to over 500 homes today in just over the last six years since we moved in.

Some in this thread referred to our new market as Scotty's Village Market, That may be correct. I haven't paid close attention to any name on the building but I have always heard it called South Village Market. I believe the owners son's name is Scott so that may be correct too.

Name aside South Village Market in Norton Commons also represents the incredible continued growth in our business area. I am very aware of South Village Market and in fact spoke to the owner today (Tuesday). They expect to be open late next week, but frankly I think it may be a bit longer. Still lots to put up. It will be a first class operation. As we get closer to the opening we will be posting additional details on our Resident's and Businesses of Norton Commons Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/192087660234/ It is not exclusive to Norton Commons. Please feel free to join the Facebook page!

Don't flatter yourselves. Someone made me aware of this thread and hence my comments. I am always glad to help our businesses in Norton Commons. The Market is owned by a local family and a family member will be living above it. Just like people did in times past...

They are bringing something very special to this end of town. Similar in concept to what others have pointed out as their fond childhood memories. Can't wait for it to open.

The only thing I miss here in Norton Commons is the "J" train, the elevated train that ran past our "live works" growing up in Woodhaven, Queens http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/11/reale ... wanted=all

Except instead of Bodegas, and chains,we had Italian bakeries, Polish butchers, shoe stores, furniture stores, toy stores, music and dance stores, shoe repair, funeral parlors, bars, lots of bars, banks, Realtors, and most of the Halloween costumes you get now started on 88th st and Jamaica ave.
It was a little Horner novelty like store called Rubies, (check your costume tags) , candy stores, Delis that carried Boars Head products. Paint and wallpaper store, Giant hardware stores, on two different ends of the Ave. Owned by the same folks. Fruit and vegetable store, and the family lived around the corner. The "Biondo's" were their names. Pizzerias, that would sell by the slice, and bags of Zeppole with powdered sugar, 10C a piece. Of course places of worship, and wedding halls.

Aaah, the good old days.

Oh, and don't forget to check out the slide show in the left column.
My High school is in there 1500 kids!
The elevated train takes you to Jamaica, Queens one way, and Manhattan the other!
The bandshell where the likes of many a musicians got their start. i.e. Deborah Harry, AKA Blondie, and Cindi Lauper came from 90th street.
I grew up on 89th st.

I spent some time with Scott today and the official business name is now Scott's Village Market. There was a name change along the way.

Image

One thing that hasn't changed is the family's enthusiasm for the fresh produce, meat, grocery and deli business. I spent about 30 minutes with Scott and couldn't even attempt to remember all the things he plans to offer. For instance Scott plans to offer both prime and top choice meats. I bring this up because he will be smoking them too! Note the photo of Scott below with his smoker which he plans to keep fired up with brisket along with many other fresh poultry and meats.

Image

Scotty's Village Market will do their own baking, sell milk the old fashioned way in GLASS BOTTLES, offer ready to go dinners, offer a full deli with many of the delicacies prepared fresh in house, grocery items, fresh produce, along with homemade (perhaps not on the opening) pastrami and corned beef and much more. It will be a place to catch up with friends, enjoy fresh baked pastry in the morning with freshly brewed coffee and with weather permitting sit along their sidewalk cafe tables and enjoy the day. Stay for lunch or come back and pick up something special for dinner too!

But it is much more than that. The key theme I heard over and over was convenience, freshness and quality. Scott's Village Market promises to be an outstanding addition to the community and if all goes well he may actually open on Meeting Street in Norton Commons to some degree next week.
