And right now, their pizza is my favorite in town.
Reading other reviews had put me in mind of a Chicago type Italian restaurant, dark(ish), quiet booths, (usually red) candles, and brick walls. Coals is not exactly like that. It's more of an open area with tables placed close together, no booths, and no real privacy. It does have brick walls and the candles are there (albeit to keep the pizzas warm after being delivered) It wouldn't be my first place for a romantic pizza date night. (yes, they do exist!)
DD and I shared a Brownsboro, and we loved it. DH got a pizza with red sauce and meatballs. The meatballs had a very strong flavor of garlic and onions. He is pure New York Italian (but doesn't love garlic) I am pure Indiana French (lol) and do love garlic, but the meatballs were a little strong for both of us.
The red sauce is amazing. It tastes so fresh and delicious! The pizza crust itself is just the best. It is chewy with a bit of crunch, and absolutely wonderful. Our server explained to us that it is cold fermented for at least three days (instead of being forced to rise more quickly in a warm environment)
I had a glass of Kim Crawford Chardonnay. For the price, I was not impressed with the size of the pour, but the wine was good. John had a bottle of Blue Moon Ale.
I ordered their dessert special to go. It was a pumpkin cake of some sort. I just tried a bite of it for this review. I MUST have the recipe. It is the most amazing pumpkin dessert I have ever had in my life. (and I make a pumpkin pie that could make angels cry!)
We were in there on a Saturday between 6:30 and 7:45, so I won't comment on the service except to say our server was friendly, helpful and nice. We walked away for $60.00 including the tip.
We will definitely return, and I would highly recommend it.
