732 Social Closes

by Antonia L » Wed Sep 21, 2011 2:10 pm

Sad situation.

From the Courier:

732 Social closes in NuLu
1:30 PM, Sep. 21, 2011

Amid an ongoing legal battle, 732 Social has shut down.

In May, local foodies were surprised at the news that the popular East Market Street eatery had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

At the time, chef/owner Jason Lewellyn stated that the filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court was aimed at preventing 732 Social from closing amid a leasing dispute with the Green Building, its home since opening in 2009.

With great fanfare, Lewellyn started 732 Social with Louisville restaurateurs Michael and Steven Ton (Basa, Doc Crow’s). The Tons eventually left the operation.

The Green Building is owned by Haystack Partners LLC, which includes Gill Holland, the developer who has taken a major role in revitalizing the East Market Street area, aka NuLu.

“My attorneys have ordered me to close up shop,” says Lewellyn. “We put out a final offer to move [the restaurant] amicably but the offer was rejected.”

One of my favorites, especially for late-night. Seems like they helped to pioneer the resurgence of the charcuterie plate (in Louisville, anyway), which, I hope, is a trend-that-doesn't-end.

Last year, my wife and I landed at Louisville airport past 10pm on a Tuesday night. We wanted food... good food... late on a weeknight. Where? We stopped at 732 Social, hoping that they might feed us a meat-n-cheese plate, or at least fill us up on booze. They proceeded to bring out a bunch of their staples: whole snapper, duck-n-liver, and more, not to mention the meat-n-cheese. All prepared perfectly, and without complaint. Thanks Jayson, and I hope that we see you in a new place soon!

So sad to hear, we'll miss what you guys have done there :(
We'll look forward to the next adventure though.

I easily could have had my last meal at 732 and died a happy man.

Yeah, that really does bite. Is there a place here for public blaming and shaming?

This is just shocking. How could possibly the cities best restaurant close? Did NuLu grow too fast? The place was ALWAYS packed. Did it close because it was losing money? Not sure how that could be.....ANy plans for a reincarnation? I thnk that concept is here to stay in Louisville.

Not a single fiber of my being believes this a defeat for Jayson. That man is so evolved, I know this. Worked with him about 6 1/2 years ago as an opening supervisor of Blu in the Marriott when he was the Executive Sous Chef of this entirely new full service downtown hotel (prior to Proof). I couldn't believe what I witnessed when I saw him conduct a training session. Every once in a while you've gotta brag about the people you know, right? Jayson is one of those guys that'll keep blowing us away, no question.

I don't think that was the least bit cryptic, Heather. What are YOU getting at?
