New Spots downtown

by MichaelBolen » Thu Sep 15, 2011 12:37 am

On my recent visit, I noticed construction or heard news of several new spots. My concern is that there seems to be many chains, and I would not want downtown Louisville to become "chained out" like downtown Indy.

Here are new spots coming soon, Please clarify and add to my list:

1 Potbelly (on 4th)
2 Smashburger (on 4th)
3 Whiskey Lounge (from what I understand it is just DCE with a name change and new decoration/vibe?)
4 Troll Pub (arena district)
5 Decca (NuLu)
6 I recall the name of some French style bakery announced for arena district?
7 I recall another spot to be opened by the owners of Hillbilly Tea
8 Spinelli's (supposedly on Jefferson St I think)

Any others I have letf out or any upcoming spots? I think downtown is becoming the third or fourth foodie scene after Highlands, Crescent Hill/Clifton, and St Matthews.

As an aside, why does Louisville have one of the best foodie scenes in America but one of the worst retail clothing scenes? One cannot even buy a shirt or tie downtown and the "upscale" malls are a strip mall (the Summit) and small malls anchored by JC Penny, Sears, and Dillards. May be a topic for the about Louisville board....

As a side note/clarification ... Spinellis has been open for a couple of months. It is at 5th & Jefferson in the space formally occupied by Down to Lunch,

The are also adding a cocktail program and Catalonian style tapas.

Fashion Post is just around the corner from as well. When I was a kid we shopped at the Rodes in "The Mall" - then when I took my first real job in finance it was the Rodes in the Stark's building. On balance I don't think Louisville has enough disposable income to justify a really upscale mall or shopping district - thus we are surrounded by Walmart and Target. I buy my kakhi pants and cotton shirts at Khol's most of the time. My well to do 16 year old shops at Rodes and Fashion Post however.
