Several weeks ago my wife and I headed to Lexington, looking forward to spending a relaxing evening at the Gratz Park Inn, preceeded by a wonderful dinner at Jonathan's. It turned into one of the worst experiences we've had in years - both from the hotel and the restaurant.
The hotel tried, but did not succeed. Between showers moving from boiling hot to ice cold, air conditioning that cycled on and off so loudly we were awakened all night with large "bangs", and a condescending staff ("you will like the restaurants down the street for breakfast better than here, as they are cheaper and will appeal to you more"), we were less than thrilled.
The restaurant was no better. We were seated in Siberia, and even though we asked for a better table (and had reserved a table in the main dining room) we were not accommodated (with a half full restaurant!). We were upcharged severely on the wine. Our fish arrived overcooked, and when we called the waiter over he lit his cigarette lighter, looked at the entree, and said that this is Jonathan's version of "medium rare to rare" (not a bit of red in the tuna, and the halibut uncuttable). We tried to find a manager to complain, but no manager ever entered the bar (where we were seated), asked about our food or service, or was available when it was time to leave.
Also, I had asked about dress, as the temperature was in the mid-90's, but was told I was to wear at least a sports jacket, as all in the dining room - and most in the bar - were in jackets if not ties. Seating next to us were a couple wearing shorts (he was 5'7" and around 240 lbs, in his 70's).
The week after this experience I sent Jonathan a three-page letter detailing exactly what happened in the evening; I was not looking for a "freebee", but some apology or recognition that all may not have been as good as usual. It has now been two additional weeks, and I have heard nothing.
Lexington today has a large number of good restaurants, maybe not all striving for the peaks that Jonathan's has reached with his cuisine, but still in the three star plus range. I strongly recommend supporting one of these newer places, in the hopes that a more eager restaurateur might care more for his customers and for the front of the house (where I believe more of the blame to lie).
