CJ road trips to Salem, Ind., for Pig Miracle 'cue

by Robin Garr » Sat Sep 29, 2007 8:19 am

Marty travels to Salem, Ind. - about an hour's drive northwest of Louisville (37.5 miles from the corner of Highland and Baxter on two-lane roads) - for today's three-star review of Pig Miracle, which sounds like a pretty good barbecue joint. Personally, I love to do little road-trip reports for folks, but with the advantage of unlimited space on LouisvilleHotBytes or a mini-review in the expanded space that LEO provides for eats coverage, I don't have to use up my only once-a-week shot to do it. Anyway, the Southern Indiana hills are beautiful, and never more so than in the autumn, so that's a minor quibble. The barbecue sounds mighty good in Marty's well-turned descriptions, too, so good that the rating system almost cries out for *some* appropriate way to designate Great Barbecue with some kind of signal other than a laconic, generic three stars.

Pig Miracle's not fancy, but the barbecue is all you need[/url]

I'm embarrassed to say I drive past that place all the time and have never felt inclined to try it out. Guess we'll have to give it a whirl.

Marty's right, Pig Miracle has some pretty tasty barbecue.

And let me tell you, they also make a fantastic buttermilk pie.

I live in Jeff, it rarely takes much more than a half-hour for me to get there.

As the one who put articles about Southern Indiana, including Salem, on Wikipedia, I can tell you there is some nice site-seeing in Salem. The Courthouse is lovely, the John Hay Center has a nice train museum. Beck's Mill has been restored and is definitely worth the extra drive to check out, especially during fall colors.
