New Cafe in St. Matthews and Brendan's closed?

by Linda C » Thu Sep 01, 2011 5:02 pm

First Dutch's and now Brendan's? Wow, that place always seemed busy to me.

I saw a sign that said something Cafe on St Matthews Ave near Lonnie's Hot Dogs. Anyone?

It's next to the firehouse. The sign says something about savory waffle cones.

It's called The Neighborhood Cafe, and the sign on the building says it's "Home of the Savory Cone." The website -- the-neighborhood-cafe.com -- explains:

Introducing “The Savory Cone”
An entirely new concept, we've taken the crisp crunch and easy to eat shape of a waffle cone and turned it from a sweet confection to an herbaceaous meal! Filled with homemade favorites and unique salads, The Savory Cone is a whole new twist on the boring old sandwich. Plus, it's light and delicious and doesn't slow you down like the breads and heavy rolls of hoagies or subs. It's easy to eat - like a one-handed sandwich, so it doesn't slow you down if you're on the run, either! Our cones are homemade and offered in three delicious flavors: Fresh Herb, Southwestern and our Classic House Seasoned.

I've never eaten a salad in a cone before, so I'll have to check it out. The website doesn't seem to say when they open, and when I drove by they were still doing renovation work inside.

I'll give them the benefit of a doubt, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this.

Same here! Well, chicken and waffles have appeared together on menus, so this isn't completely odd. Though I never really liked that combo... And Sugar Cube Waffles had good savory waffle combos at the St Matthews Farmers Market last year. I wonder if these are the same people?

We went by The Neighborhood Cafe, on our way to Gross Diamonds today and they aren't open yet. The windows are still covered with paper and the building permit is still in the window. Sounds like an interesting concept though. Looking forward to trying it.

Went into Neighborhood Cafe today. They said it was their first day open and they called it a soft opening. Next door to Lonnie's. Interesting concept. We'd just eaten at Lonnie's, so we split a bowl of mushroom soup. Thick and tasty. Would give them a few days before venturing back.

I went to the Neighborhood Cafe last weekend and tried the feta berry salad in a cone. The salad itself was fine, but I’m not sold on the cone concept. Salad doesn’t pack too well in a cone, and much of it just spilled out onto the plate. I think I would have been just as happy if they’d served it in a bowl with a few croutons. However, some of the other fillings -- egg salad, tuna salad -- might work better in a cone.

well, all I can say is that if they are the same consistency as my waffle cones except savoury; then one is going to get in an awful mess!!! Out of a box of 100 we probably lose 20 that are broken beyond use. They are probably making them themselves though, so maybe they won't waste as much. Still can't quite comprehend this though. Wacky concept, hey whatever floats your boat!!

This was featured on Headline News about 20 minutes ago. Wouldn't want to be in that line later on today!!!!

Curiosity got the best of me and we ate here last week. The savory cone was delicious. Imagine eating a salad inside a crouton. I had the vegetarian tofu Mediterranean (delicious) my husband had a mixed veggie (delicious) The soup that day had tarragon, which I cannot eat. I will be back because everything if so fresh and delicious looking! The owner is so sweet, she wants the place to be a friendly gathering spot. She also has a reading room with free WIFI.
