Hot new State Fair food?

by Leslie Stewart » Sat Aug 20, 2011 12:56 pm

Looking for this year's "must try" item - had the Krispy Kreme cheeseburger last year, and pork butt on a stick the year before. What's new? Forgive me if this has already been posted . . .

Fried Derby Pie and fried Kool-Aid are certainly the most hyped new editions although there are several others. There is a new stand selling Kentucky Lamb in the Kentucky agriculture tent that is in front of Broadbend arena, we tried it and it was quite good.

Having worked up in the Jockey Club Suites kitchen at Churchill Downs these past 3 meets, I'm pretty done with Derby Pie, and I think I as I'm not wont to drink the Kool-Aid, I'm not apt to eat it, either. The lamb sounds good, though . . .

Are you sure it was new, Mark? There's been a lamb booth in the Kentucky Agriculture tent for many years. Lamb is big business in Western Kentucky.

I don't remember finding any lamb last year, actually . . . I still miss the Ostrich producers for the sliders before their time, though!

I certainly don't remember it but maybe it was there and they just have a fancy new trailer this year or they are in a different location. If I would have found it previously I certainly would have eaten it since I do like lamb.

The lamb is really good.

The maple bacon sundae is amazing.

I usually stick to the Pineapple Whip for dessert, but where would one find the maple bacon sundae?

just got back from the fair and had the lamb, based on the reviews. it was very good. i feel a little dirty and ashamed to admit that i tried the deep fried derby pie. DISGUSTING! way to take something great and ruin it. all i could taste was the grease from the deep fryer.
i will say that pound for pound, the deep fried derby pie line was the largest of the entire fair. go figure.
