Fresh pita bread coming to the Highlands?

by Scott Campbell » Thu Aug 18, 2011 11:59 am

I walked by the late, lamented Amazing Grace's yesterday and there was a sign posted in the window saying that a business called the Aladdin Market was coming there soon. The sign also had these words on it: halal meat, seafood, vegetables and bakery. Does that mean they'll be making their own pita bread? I'm tired of driving out to Hike's Point for it. Anybody have the inside scoop?

That would be great, I hope they make fresh Turkish bread too!

Not for nothing, but I find it amazing that there are a couple to maybe more shops cropping up that serve halal meat, and only one Kosher butcher in town.

Scott, where do you buy pita in Hikes Point?

Unfortunately, I can never remember the name of the place but it's on Klondike Lane, just off of Hikes lane. At least, I think their bread is fresh. It certainly is softer than anything you can get in a grocery store.

Al-Watan? That would be outstanding.

Halal is easier to do than Kosher (despite their many similarities).

Here in Lexington, we had a place that made fresh pita bread for a while. They would serve it to you straight out of the oven if you were there at the right time. Fantastic. But now the same place orders their bread from Michigan... their big, beautiful oven (which must have been expensive to install) is just sitting there. They are using it as storage. So sad. I hope that Aladdin Market will follow-up and offer fresh pita!

Easy math. ~9,500 Jews in Louisville. Less than 300 eat kosher meat. Many more Muslims in Louisville, much higher percentage eat halal meat. Have you seen the new mosque/community center on Westport Road. It's enormous! Only a growing vibrant community can build a facility like that!.

Yes Jon, IIII know. unfortunate but true. Jon, would you agree with Charles that Halal is easier than Kosher despite their "similarities"? I 'm not convinced of that. It is the same process in slaughtering of animals, and what is acceptable for consumption or not. Would you agree?

The reason Halal is easier is because it doesn't matter who is doing it and what instruments you use to do it. I'm no expert on kosher, but as I understand it, kosher involves who does it and that the instruments need to be certified as kosher as well. My understanding on Halal is that anyone can slaughter the animals with any instruments as long as the rules are followed. There's no such thing silverware or plateware that is Halal. That is why kosher meat is, by definition, halal but halal is not necessarily kosher. That's the way a Muslim explained it to me, at least.

Hmm, I find that interesting, I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that "anyone" can do it though. If anyone can do it what would be the point of have Halal guidelines for slaughter and consumption.?

I found this pretty interesting and informative, as it outlines the similarities and differences between the two sets of dietary laws:

Thanks Antonia, so the "anybody" theory is out, it can be any sane adult Muslim, but I do believe that there is some religious authority in the slaughterhouse overseeing the "ritual slaughter" for Halal as the would be for Kosher slaughter.

Halal food "inspection" is developing rapidly in the U.S. and Canada and in some ways along the lines of kosher certification. Until about 80 years ago, religious Jews relied on their local rabbi to tell them what brands were kosher. Most food was locally prepared or sourced (including kosher beef and lamb). Around that time, national certification agencies entered the picture coincidental with the development of national brands. The same seems to have occurred with halal certification, but starting in the 1950's and 1960's. Some halal agencies have package logos (most contain a crescent and the word halal) like the OU for kosher certification. I don't know what the cost is for halal certification, but kosher certification can be costly.

Don't get excited Robin. I wasn't suggesting Al-Watan was coming to the Highlands. (Although you're right--that would be outstanding.) I was just telling Heather where I buy my pita bread.
