Quality/Price

by Billy Keene » Mon Aug 15, 2011 12:02 am

I get the idea that some restaurants may be downgrading the quality of their food in order to produce it more cheaply.

I was wondering if anyone else has noticed a difference in the food at maybe several restaurants.

I would rather a restaurant raise their price a little on some of the menu items than downgrade the quality and taste.

Actually, I was referring more to chains and fast food places.

It seems many of those types of places specialize in edible, fast, and cheap more than good. Of course, there a a few exceptions.

Well if the subject is fast food, and specifically fast food burgers...

Could it be the the beef industry plumbing the depths of edibility.

I have noticed that hamburgers have started to taste kind of strange.

I was actually wondering what happened to "hot and juicy hamburgers" but I guess the question is what has happened to safely edible burgers. If they have to be injected with disinfectant to be safe, I think I'm going to have to consider another menu choice.

Yeah, it's crazy that fat in a hamburger is considered more unhealthy than ammonia.

One place where you can definitely see the decline in food quality and quantity is at Walt Disney World in Orlando. There used to be many unique dining experiences available but in the last 10 years the variety and quality of food choices have greatly diminished. Obviously a portion of this is due to the economy but in the case of Disney a bigger part is due to their dining plan. You pay a flat fee (or get it included with your room rate) for your meals. Obviously with a plan like this every one is going to try to get the most expensive food. This has caused either the elimination or the reduction in portion sizes of many of the unique dishes to make them less attractive to people on the plan. In reality all it has done is brought everything down to the lowest possible common denominator! I realize this isn't directly related to Louisville but it's certainly a demonstration of how not to maintain good quality and variety in menu choices.

Anytime anything is provided for free, or for one price, demand always exceeds supply. Especially, if the folks providing the service aren't allowed to set their own prices.

Wishful thinking can't change the laws of economics. Though many have tried, and many still must learn.
