Deep-fried Derby Pie headed to the State Fair
Posted on August 9, 2011 by Rob Gates

Last year it was the Krispy Kreme burger joining the ranks of deep-fried Twinkies and Snickers bars as some of the more outlandish foods to be had at the Kentucky State Fair.

For 2011, the fair introduces another gastronomic delight with much more of a local flavor - deep-fried Derby Pie. And yes, this is the real Derby Pie as prepared by Louisville’s own Kern’s Kitchen, Inc. The traditional bourbon pies will be dipped in funnel cake batter and fried in the Sivori tent, located in the South Wing C Parking Lot.

Also joining the fair this year is deep-fried Kool Aid, first introduced at the San Diego Fair. Made on location, this unusual sensation is a combination of funnel cake batter and cherry Kool-Aid powder that dissolves as it is heated. Curious fairgoers can find deep-fired Kool-Aid at booths in both South Wing C and the South Wing parking lot.

A few other unlikely desserts, including the Maple Bacon Sundae. The sundae is a bizarre combination of butter pecan ice-cream, maple syrup, and bacon that fans claim is worth a try. Anthony Allega, owner of Big Kahuna, said that the sundae has already been a big hit at several fairs this year. Allega will also offer frozen chocolate-dipped bananas, strawberries and cheesecake.

Patrons simply looking for a balanced meal will also have a place to indulge. Vendors in South Wing C will be offering traditional breakfast foods, hot deli favorites and inner classics such as spaghetti and salad.

Yes please  Seriously, I would try the Derby Pie. I could pass on the Kool aid balls and the KK cheeseburger. However, the bacon sundae is intruiging. Good Lord, I'm weird.

I've always wanted to try the Krispy Kreme burger but with a breakfast sausage patty instead of a burger. **yum!!**

I eat corn dogs twice a year~ at the State Fair and St. James. The deep-fried Derby Pie sounds very interesting. I might try a slice of that, this year.

I remain a traditionalist when it comes to KSF cuisine: Po'k Chop Sammich', drizzled with BBQ sauce.

My wife and I went to the fair our first year here in 2007. We went mainly for the food. While it was enjoyable, we found it mostly overpriced, especially when you factor in the cost of parking and admission. By the time all was said and done, we'd probably spent $60 that evening just for the two of us, and I found myself wishing we'd just gone to a local restaurant instead. I don't see us going back unless there's another compelling reason besides the food.

Going to the fair is more of a tradition in my family than anything else...I am native to Louisville and in my now 52 years I can say I have missed 2 years of the fair. I regret missing those 2 years. I love everything about the fair the sounds, the sights, the food of course and even the smells...nothing can compare taking our small kids into the cow barn and just by luck getting to see a baby calf being born right in front of us. Yes now I take more sit down breaks than I used to but I still have to look at the cake displays and the quilts and even the 4H stuff...Don't give up on it there is more than the high priced food

Bev, I like you have always enjoyed going to the fair no matter where I've lived. I do however think that Jeff definitely has a point about prices. Food prices are one thing because you can choose what to eat while you're there and your choices can greatly influence the amount you spend. On other hand parking and entrance fees have gotten ridiculous! Parking is now $8.00 and the entry fee is $10.00 this year. Considering the majority of things in the halls are advertising in one way or another these prices hardly seen justifiable. Just for my wife and I to attend will cost $28.00, not including anything we eat or drink while there. In my opinion that certainly sounds like a lot of money to look at other people's advertising.

Oh I entirely agree about the prices..I used to go 3 or more times during the run of the fair but now only go once or twice and always get my tickets ahead of time at Kroger for the discount. Our kids are grown so we also don't have to deal with the midway anymore so that cuts down on our spending alot.I dont like the commercial exhibits since they renovated the East Wing and moved them to the new part of the South Wing but that is just me so I just do a quick walk thru and pretty much avoid that space

The food IS a compelling reason to go. Name a restaurant where you can get such goodies as a fried corn dog, fried fish, fried Derby Pie, fried kool aid balls, fried funnel cakes and top all this goodness off with a craft Bud Light.

Like BevP, I'm very much a Fair supporter. I haven't entered anything in a couple years, but you get free admission if you do.

The best deal on corn dogs is a $1(maybe $2) corn dog stand on the Midway.
