Hilarious! And scary!

Here are a few articles bearing on this wacky subject:

Urban Legends Pages: Square Watermelon (It's true!)

Square Fruit Stuns Japanese Shoppers (BBC, 2001)

Buy a plastic case and grow your own! (In Japan they sell for $82 a melon!)

Chef Looi,

So what is it? A square watermelon? I assume the point is easier/more efficient transport...

it is an excellent idea. saves space for transportation, display and perfectly cut square melon pieces without wasting the rounded corners!

I was reading a magazine the other day and found an article about a Korean growing square apples. They cost $7 a piece due to labor costs since he ties square plastic molds around each bud. He hopes to find a way to mass market them at some point.
I never realized round was such a problem.
