great French cheese website

by NicoleP » Thu Mar 15, 2007 1:50 am

We routinely order cheese from this site and it is absolutely amazing!!! I don't know how they can ship to the US because most of their cheeses are raw (unpasteurized) and I was under the impression that is a no no in the US of A, but I am very glad they seemed to have discovered a loophole in US customs. I highly recommend them to anyone who misses the European cheese experience.

Thanks for the link, Nicole! As I understand it, the law only forbids the import of fresh raw-milk cheeses. After something like 60 days (time enough for the listeria bacillus to die off), it's considered safe. For many raw-milk cheeses this is not a problem, although a few that are intended to be eaten fresh will be way past their prime by then.

Ah that makes sense, as I actually saw a fresh milk cheese at--hold onto your socks--Sam's Club yesterday.

ahhhh, thanks for the clarification. We were confused as to why it was ok, but weren't complaining!!

The cheeses are really terrific though, particularly some of the milder goat's milk ones (the Mothais sur Feuille is a must!)
