Non-Sushi Recommendations for Hiko a Mon?

by RonnieD » Tue Aug 02, 2011 10:44 pm

Going to Hiko a Mon for the first time tomorrow night for a friend's birthday, but not feeling sushi.

Hiko a Mon features a HUGE menu that is pretty busy (from what I see online). What are the best non-sushi options that I should consider?

I like the salmon with the bourbon glaze sauce. Add a couple of grilled shrimp and you are good to go.

I second the Hamachi Kama and a side of rice is a perfect meal, then Cold zaru soba with tempura is a great meal.

My husband and I usually go and just eat apps and small plates Izakaya style and always leave stuffed and happy. Grilled whole squid is very good. They also have a great Japanese beer called Echigo which is crispy and cold. perfect for hot days like this.

Hope you have a great time.

Kelly,

I was looking at the grilled whole squid pretty hard.

Thanks for the recommendations! Keep 'em coming!

Ankimo ponzu is one of my favorite dishes ever. Also, the kurobuta pork tonkatsu.

Sorry, got busy and forgot to check back in.

We sampled from three small plates: Chicken Teryaki Flatbread, Calamari Pirates, and Vegetable Tempura.
(note they have not updated the online menu so it does not fully represent the current menu)

All three were absolutely fabulous. Some of the best calamari I have had in the city. Perfectly cooked, so no rubber band effect like you can so often run into. The wife does not like calamari and she had to concede that it was spectacular. BIG veggies in the tempura, wonderfully battered and fried! The flatbread was tasty, but a big heavy handed with the sauce. I liked the goat cheese, but the wife thought it made the whole thing a bit busy. That said, there was none left.

Our one disappointment was the Japanese Potato Salad which came on a bed of prosciutto and was topped with fresh greens. The greens were too much for a garnish and not enough for a compliment (and were still a little dirty...). The potato salad itself was unremarkable. We were expecting a unique twist on a classic dish, but instead got the classic dish. The potato salad was good, but not what we were expecting.

Overall, Hiko a Mon is a complete win and we cannot wait to go back (especially since we did not see the Hiko a Mon Dinner Course until it was too late...)

Thanks for all of the recommendations!

Sorry to resurrect an older thread but has anyone tried the omakase at Hiko a Mon? I know he is from Kyoto and it mentions having a seasonal theme. It sounds very much like kaiseki to me - would love to have the opportunity in da 'Ville!
