By the way, does anybody think it's strange that this happened the same day that Museum Plaza was canceled? Certainly makes you think there's another backdoor deal were going to hear about. I hope my skepticism is unfounded but based on recent events it certainly seems probable.

I think this is a much more doable project that involves only a tiny fraction of the bucks involved in Museum Plaza. Museum Plaza needed to put together a huge financial package, impossible in an ongoing recession/depression. I expect these folks can finance the Whiskey Row project out of their own funds.

As I wrote in my review of Doc Crow's, anybody who wants to call BS on the "dilapidated" scam can just take a look at the buildings IN THE SAME BLOCK that are thriving in venues that are extremely stable, characterful and effectively used. Take a look at the ceiling in the back rooms of Doc Crow's, that is, the ceiling that was heavily built of closely spaced beams to hold up stacks of full whiskey barrels in the floors above.

I certainly agree that the Whisky Row is very doable and will be a great asset to Louisville. I just am afraid that in order to entice them to do this project there is an agreement to reimburse them for some of the money they spent on the site work for Museum Plaza! The argument would be that you made the site better for future development. Considering a deal was made with Blue to entice him (allowing the demolition of several other buildings on Main Street) it wouldn't be farfetched to think another deal was made with the new developers to entice them!

Hard to say. I do wonder what the carnage around Eighth and Main to the river is going to look like once the dust clears. Did they really tear down a different row of 19th century buildings, leaving only the facades standing free? Is there not a big hole in the ground there now? I don't get to that corner of downtown much and honestly haven't paid attention. But I think it's going to take some bucks just to clear the scene, and open Seventh again. Additional swag would be hard to justify.

Yes, there are four buildings in the middle of the 600 block of West Main that have had everything behind the facades removed. They've been that way for a while, but I'm not sure exactly when it was done.

Thanks for the photo. At a glance, it appears it didn't do much damage to the Main Street streetscape. I hope the free-standing facades are securely braced, though, and won't become "unstable and have to be torn down."

Here's a view from google maps that shows the site where the building was going to be located. As you can see not much was done other than demolition. It also appears that it would be relatively easy to reopen 7th street.

Here's another showing a top view of the main street facades. They looked to be quite well braced and since they are using the area where the buildings were demolished as a parking lot I'm sure they have been inspected to ensure their integrity.

A failure of stewardship for sure. But even with a hole in the roof, I'll bet you 10 bucks the bones of that old hulk are still strong.

If you define "stewardship" as the failure of multiple owners over the past 50 or so years to perform any semblance of maintenance, then I will agree. If your definition of "failure of stewardship" only includes the most recent owner and/or the past 5 or so years, then I would beg to differ.

I am inclined to accept your bet...but will require some time to ponder the logical chances of remaining structural integrity...But first...I nap.
