Louisville Chamber of Commerce - Try It Local

by John Robert Harris » Mon Aug 01, 2011 4:50 pm

I would like to introduce you to our Try it Local daily deal program here at the Metro Chamber of Commerce - GLI.

This was created to keep all profits within the community! Eat and Shop LOCAL!!

With our focus set on the success of the Louisville business, we do separate ourselves from the competition, of that like Groupon and Living Social.

• More money - Business keeps 60 to 70% (GLI members) vs. 50% w/competitor
• Local money – Stays here in our community not sent to Chicago or D.C.
• Faster Money - 10 business days
• No contracts
• Our superb demographics – 40yr old female with family vs. 27 male
(This works to the advantage of some business as the potential of more disposable income is there as well as an established family which creates a wider interest in deals)

Some key numbers from our studies:
- 86% will spend more than the deal amount
- 28% become repeat customers
- 33% of all deals sold will go unused but still paid on

All that we ask is of you to design a deal that is at least 40% - 50% off. There are A LOT of $5 of $25 deals floating around which is 20%, however since you get paid on the deal it can not only outperform due to the spark in interest since the deal looks better to the consumer but pay off better since you get paid on the revenue.

- We have had roughly a 3x increase in our subscriber base in the last 3-4 months

- I would like to extend the opportunity to any restaurant or business that is interested in doing one of these. Please feel free to contact me at jharris@uniqueic.com or 812-280-2146

FYI on this deal. It's not good on Friday or Saturday, must be used all at once and is only valid until October 31, 2011 even though the e-mail they sent out said it was good until October 31, 2012. (I verified the 2011 date with their customer service)

I've eaten at AP's a number of times (love it) and not once spent $40. Plan on taking a group or being REALLY hungry (or drunk) since if you don't spend the full amount you lose the remainder.

Honestly, and this is just my opinion here, but between restrictions, high dollar amount, the date confusion, and their need to use GLI to provide the appearance of credibility, I didn't buy. Seems a little uh... strange to me. Probably fine, but I'm picky about who I give my personal info to. Especially online.

Chris - Most everything you mentioned is listed on the deal's page. As far as the date, that was purely a typo and a mistake on the IT side of things. However you will not see a deal from us or a competitor that is valid for that long. These deals are created and designed for immediate business with hopes of repeat customers, vs. a voucher redeemed here and there over a long period of time.

This deal was created with the business's best interest in mind. When speaking with the owner/marketing personnel, this was the best idea to allow the diner to have the ability to try various pieces from their menu and still come within the deals value. Considering the restrictions, as you can imagine Friday and Saturdays are busier and most every restaurant would love more weekday night business, as a result this was what they desired.

If you were buying two dinners and decided to enjoy an appetizer, with drinks (alcoholic or not) you would be near this total. Or skip the appetizer and take advantage of the "crafters" side of the restaurant. Their menu can easily be found from the link(s) above.

This really opens the doors wide open versus a $10 for $20 or even a $15 for $30 which in the end caps you maybe a bit too short and leaves you paying out of pocket at the time of service. Therefore a higher value amount has the potential to create a happier consumer.

Fair enough John. 15 months seemed like a long window. I still say $40 is a lot to commit to for the price point of the restaurant, but even if you only spend $30 it's saving you some money.

The expiration date is kind of a big deal. You guys should have sent out a correction. I know for a fact people missed the fine print on the web page and only read the large print in the e-mail. At least you should send out an e-mail to people who purchased making sure they know they only have 3 months and not 15. Especially to people who purchased 2.

It's important for a new business (especially an online business) to earn trust and it's important to be up front if you're going to throw GLI's name around. Critical typos like that aren't the way to go about it. Your customers will probably be more than a little pissed if they show up in November and are told their certificate is no longer valid when the e-mail said they had a year.

I know I would be.

At tryitlocal, AP Crafters and GLI. Equally.

I just spoke sharply to Steve in the All About Louisville forum. Anybody who wants to read his curmudgeonly analysis can read it over there. I've made a rare move to delete it (and responses) here.

I'm confused. Looking at APC's menu it looks like a party of four would easily spend $40 if they ordered one appetizer, four burgers and beers or soft drinks. Looks like a pretty good coupon to me (although it's sold out).
