Museum Plaza: It's off

WHAS-11 has the story ...

(Not quite food-related, but a big enough topic, I think, to justify discussion on the main forum.)

That's unfortunate, I really wanted to see it get built :(

So, . . . will they reopen 7th Street?

Yeah, not suprising. With the economy falling into the second half of a double dip and no realistic prospects of recovery for a few more years, it'd have been impossible to keep such a big project on life support indefinitely.

But hey, look at what else has happened in and around downtown Louisville over the lifespan of the Museum Plaza project: a new arena, half of Whiskey Row developed and the other half saved, the explosion of NuLu and growth of Butchertown, a new distillery planned for West Main, half of Liberty Green built, Big Four pedestrian bridge work in progress, etc.

Despite a struggling economy, urban Louisville is still being developed and revitalized, and in ways that are small-scale, affordable, and largely locally owned and -driven. While Museum Plaza may have been a good thing for the city, and other major projects may come to fruition if and when the economy ever recovers, clearly we don't need huge developments like that in order to grow as a livable, viable city.

The article says that the developers will put 7th Street back. I hope Mayor Greg doesn't meet with them privately and tell them they don't have to bother. :P

What Jeff said.

I'd so much rather have many smaller developments, than the "all our eggs in one basket" mega project. Although the arena likely falls into that large basket category, it has spawned enough small project to have made it completely worthwhile.

And personally, I hated the "Lego Landing" design.

A lot of the projects you mentioned are still on the planning stages and not yet finished. Hopefully they will be completed without any further interruptions. I'm still very concerned about any other backdoor deals that have been made by our metro administration!

Lois...Hell yeah they'll reopen 7th St.

I'm hearing there are already big BIG plans for this area, many of which will make the "foodie" crowd very happy....As planned there will be two parallel rows of shops and offices separated by an open "commons area". Each row of shops will have it's own architectural and commercial identity. One row will feature facades made to mirror Whiskey Row, the other side of the commons will have an ultra modern "chrome and glass identity". Already inquiring about space availability are Tony Boombazz with his newest concept which feature a menu focusing on such delights as BBQ'd seitan, tofu and (for the non-vegetarian crowd) BBQ Gyros. Others already scrambling for square footage include Sonic (walk up only), Chik-Fillet and the owners of the (former) Doll's Market. The commons area will feature a thrice (is that a word ?) weekly Farmers market where only those farmers who have had their vegetables lovingly picked by aging former hippies and their meat lovingly massaged by nubile young virgins will chosen to participate. On the days the farmers market isn't in session, the commons area will be the site of a Food Truckus Ruckus....where everyone from tatted up hipsters to chattering immigrates will be serving up everything from grilled cheese sandwiches to the latest in mystery meat.

The non-food commercial side of the project is also (already) getting underway. Parties ready to sign on the dotted "lease" line include: Todd Blue, Preservation Louisville, Planned Parenthood, The Rainbow Coalition and The Southern Baptist Convention.

Yep, gonna be big things happening at 7th and Main.

Sounds illegal.

It'll probably open but I wouldn't guarantee that the developers will pay for it! Mayor Greg will probably offer public funds to open it. He seems for a good it's rolling taxpayers money around to help the private sector.

Oh, Steve! Looks like I really skimmed over that article and missed all of these critical facts. Where should we call to make reservations?

Oh hell no, Steve! There was no mention of a local microbrewery in there!
