Fabulous Lunch at Harvest

by Harold B » Thu Jul 28, 2011 1:03 pm

Just returned from my first visit to Harvest. Everything was spot on from the hog jowl scones to the bratwurst/sauerkraut/beer mustard pizza.

Nothing against the restaurant by the items you mentioned certainly don't make me want to rush down there and eat!

Classic example of different strokes. I wanted to head down there and get lunch right now!

Agreed. I think hog jowl might scare some folks, but it's really a lot like bacon.

You're right. The name weirded me out at first, but once I found out what it actually was, it sounded good. It's the cheek of the hog. Eating hamachi kama at Wild Ginger alerted me to the fact that cheek/collar meat can be fantastic in a fish, so I don't feel as ooky about trying it from a pig.

Pig cheeks are the first thing on my plate at a hog roast. The bread pudding is also very good at Harvest.

Or you could treat it as the Abruzzese do and call it Guanciale. :D

That's close to how my Mamaw pronounces it- 'Joel Bacon.' Must be a southern thing.

Yeah my family calls it joel bacon too but when I was a kid I thought it was Joe and that he didn't want his bacon. Whatever you call it it is yummy.

Funny - it didn't hit me until this thread that this is what my Nanny meant when she would say Joe bacon.
