hidden gems in the area.

by Dee Matt » Tue Jul 26, 2011 11:18 pm

Reading over the post about Dolls I realized in my young age there's a lot of little neat things about this area I don't know. I thought it'd be neat to float a post and see what all little secrets and delights we could come up with. Might make for fun day-trips or outings for some of the other readers.

To volunteer one up first; recently I went kayaking out on the green river. On the way back in I stopped at AJs Gyros. I know that is a common name around here, but my little secret is the baklava sundae that my girlfriend ordered. It was delicious and a perfect ending to the gyro pizza we shared.
Baklava sundaes! who knew?

The mussels at El Mundo ~ I think the best in the city. Spicy, meaty, and served with Blue Dog bread.

The "Top Secret Roll" at Sapporo. It is a roll with shrimp, salmon and spicy secrets.on a banana leaf with sesame seeds - all wrapped in tinfoil and when it comes to your table they light the plate on fire. The fire toasts the sesame seeds and the roll is infused with a smoked sesame flavor. It's not on the menu and you have to write it in on the sushi sheet.

The Crème Caramel at Jack Fry's. It's the creamiest of desserts that will ever touch your tongue.

The Lobster Grilled Cheese at Bourbon's Bistro. Who doesn't like lobster and cheese?

The asiago risotto cakes at Caffe Classico! Come to think of it, the pizza at Caffe Classico!

The Vegan Buffalo Tempeh summer rolls from Morels sold at Rainbow Blossom and sometimes Heine Bros. Coffee are an eye-opening surprise, too.

Some random things I think are among the best in the city in their category.

Saint's - Pepperoni Cheese bread. Unreal

Cumberland Brews - Best Chicken sandwiches in the city, imo. Huge.

3rd St. Cafe - Jerk Pork Tenderloin Sandwich

Eiderdown - Has amazing french fries.

DiOrios - Philly Cheesesteak. Not traditional in the sense that it's toasted in the pizza oven, but they do offer Whiz, and it's my favorite version in the city.

Avocado dip at Pita Delights, any sandwich/potato salad at Morris Deli, and a burger from Bambi. Not totally hidden gems, but maybe somewhere you haven't been.

This this this.

Also the mussels at L&N. IMHO, not just the best in the city, but the best ever.

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.
