The new Shoney's

by Richard S. » Fri Jul 22, 2011 10:23 pm

Stopped in at the new Shoney's tonight. (nostalgia's sake; my first job was bussing tables at the old Danner's and my wife and I met while we were both working at Shoney's). A little on the small side; nice decor. The fact that they have a bar was unexpected. As far as I can tell they only serve beer and wine. No buffet; the salad bar was scaled back even smaller than the pre-buffet days. They seem to be building their menu around burger and sandwich baskets. The service was a little rough, but they've only been open a few days.

I believe they still have the breakfast buffet. Just not the hot buffet the rest of the day they just have the salad bar then.

From what I've seen, they have had problems keeping the buffet hot and fresh due to lack of buffet business.

As I remember, Shoneys had some very good menu items. Their fish dinner was very good.

The best buffet places would probably be those that specialize in buffet. Golden Corral is very good. I've never been to Hometown Buffet but, from what I've heard it's also very good. I think Hometown Buffet bought Ryan's.

They may have merged or something like that but I don't think Hometown bought Ryan's. They're just two different restaurants run by the same company.
