Mi Patria - closed...temporarily???

by Derrick Dones » Tue Jul 19, 2011 11:27 am

A friend who eats there weekly reported that Mi Patria is currently closed. Not sure if just the restaurant is closed, or the whole business. He heard that there has been disagreements between partners and that they were robbed recently and the cook is not too thrilled about returning.

I sure hope this is temporary, b/c they make some of the best tacos in town.

Anybody else have additional info? El Mariachi is a good alternative in that area though.

I was there the other night and spoke with the owner. I can verify but one thing- they were indeed burglarized on the 4th of July and it absolutely crippled thier revenue stream. Like many bodegas, they offered a cash transfer service (so that migrant workers may send money back home.) Of course, this service is used by many in the Latin community, so I speculate they had a great deal of money in the till waiting for bank deposit come Tuesday morning.

This breaks my heart, as I (and others here) have become quite fond of this familly and wish them only the best in thier lives. Yes, there are other places- but sometimes you like going to an establishment because of the people.

This situation reminds me of Red Pepper...

I agree while-heartedly Stephen. I wish them the best of luck and certainly hope they get the grill / cantina going again. DD

The longer I read these fora the more amazed I am at the number of restaurants who put their businesses and livelihoods at risk by failing to properly manage risk through insurance or other means.
I wish the folks at Mi Patria the best and hope they recover from this set back.

I may be wrong, but I don't believe most insurances cover cash losses. If they did, everyone would have 2 million dollars stolen when they we robbed. Kind of like saying I had 10 million in shoe boxes under the bed after your house burns down.

Justin-
Cash is certainly an insurable asset. Most policies either have a pre-set limit and/or it is possible to purchase addition limits of liabiliyt or a separate Crime Policy covering money/securities.. The insured must be able to provide "proof of loss".

My insurance does. Last July, I was broken into and the cash box (which is never normally left in the shop) was stolen. It had $2000 in it. Half was the sales tax I put by each day and the other half was the winter money I put by each day. Unfortunately, I have a $1000 deductable, so I only got $1000 back. They took my word for it and paid up promptly.

And herein may lie the crux of the biscuit. Given the "seat of the pants" operating practices of such businesses, was there even any thought (or ability) to pay for such coverage. Adding to the possible <eh hem> complications (and assuming loss of such funds)...and NOT making any particular suggestions or accusations...is the matter of these money-transfer services. I will take a WAG and speculate that not all of the money being transferred through these "services" is properly accounted for. I will also speculate that not all of it comes from the paycheck of Jose the busboy who is sending money home to sister Juanita and her 5 kids down in Juarez. Who knows HOW that kinda stuff is handled. <shrugs>

Again...wishing these folks all the best. Sometimes bad things happen to good people.

I drove by at lunch, and the open sign was lit in the window. I didn't have time to stop, but hopefully they are getting back on their feet...

I was kind of confused by the posts, as I've eaten there a few times recently. I drove by there at lunch today, as well, and it's showing as open. So hopefully they're doing OK to stay open.

It is my understanding that the grocery, bodega, "little store" portion of Mi Patria is still opened. However, after the robbery / disagreement with management, the gentleman who runs the grill in the back has not returned. DD

Not sure what point you are trying to make, if there was one???

To use one of my favorite lines from the movie Billy Madison, Steve P, "what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

BTW, I'm usually more inclined to quote old Clint Eastwood/John Wayne movies but I AM gonna have to check out the flick you mentioned. That was a good freaking line.

Regarding my post, I was more or less just thinkin' out loud...and given this heat and all...Well.
