Wheelchair-accessible restaurants in or near downtown?

by Robin Garr » Mon Jul 18, 2011 9:29 pm

To help with a coming convention, can anyone help us compile an accurate list of several restaurants downtown that are, and are not, accessible to wheelchair users without assistance? In other words, a place that's mostly flat with "just one little step" is NOT accessible, and we don't want to send wheelchair users to a place that they won't be able to get in.

I'm not sure which ones are not but I can tell you that Proof, Rivue, Morton's, Jeff Ruby's, The Oakroom, English Grille, Toast, 732 Social, and Patrick O'Shea are all accessible from personal experience. I would also expect anything in either of the Mariott's to be very accessible. Also if you go to the Indiana side all of the riverfront ones are accessible.

Mark, thanks for the voice of experience. If you think of any others, keep 'em coming.

Depends on how far out of downtown you want to go. There obviously are many more. As a rule Louisville's restaurants for the most part are pretty accessible. Of course there are exceptions, Meridian cafe being one of the biggest disappointments for lack of accessibility.

Gavi's is wheelchair accessible; I see people in motorized and hand-operated chairs there regularly. Their restrooms, however, are NOT wheelchair accessible. (Just a word of caution.)

The main floor of Another Place Sandwich Shoppe on 7th Street would be accessible but the seating on that level is limited to 3 or 4 booths. I think the only restrooms are in the basement. (No elevator.)

We are accessible at Marketplace Robin. Easy in/Easy out when it comes to wheelchairs. We actually have a few regulars that are wheelchair bound.

I would say Z's Fusion would be ... Eddie Merlot's would be ... Jeff Ruby's I think has a wheelchair lift ... 301 Bistro would be ...

I thought all restaurants had to have at least 1 wheelchair-accessible entrance?

You'd think. However, the city, which is quick to land on food trucks that don't move after 14 days, seems strangely blind about some blatant Americans With Disabilities Act violations, particularly in older buildings. I understand the city doesn't consider ADA part of its job.

Ahhh, The Hotbytes Law. If given enough time all threads morph into discussions of pizza, screaming kids, craft beer and/or food trucks.

Went to Garage last week and enjoyed some pizza and craft beer. They seem to be wheelchair accessible, with 2 garage doors leading into the building.

BBC on Main has a ramp at the 3rd street entrance and an elevator to take patrons to the second floor dining area. The steps down to the bottom floor would prohibit access to that level.

+1 I've been around this issue with them several times regarding various restaurants and other facilities. Part of the problem is there are basically three different agencies involved and they don't talk to each other. Obviously IP&L holds part of the key, there also is one individual in the health department who has some responsibilities and also the Public Works gets involved in the initial drawing reviews but does no follow-up. Any new facility, old facility that changes ownership or obtains a building permit for remodeling is supposed to comply. Unfortunately some slips through the cracks and nobody takes care of the problem afterwards. There have been a couple of lawsuits locally to force compliance but normally that's not an issue lawyers want to tackle.
