The price of 'Maters

by Steve P » Wed Jul 13, 2011 5:01 pm

So I'm getting ready to make up a big vat of salsa this weekend and I ran across "Kentucky Proud" vine ripened 'Maters at Kroger for $1.48 a pound. Just curious what ya'll are paying for a pound of 'Maters at the various farmers markets ?

Much more than that. Anywhere from around $3 a lb. for whatever the farmer considers a "regular' variety and $4 a lb. for "Heirloom"
Was this a sale ad or just at the Kroger out in the "county"?

Paid $2.99 a pound for non-heirloom at the Douglass Loop Market on Saturday. Paid more than that earlier in the season, which I mentioned in a post a few weeks back.

Interested to know if that's a Kroger Plus special. I saw them around that price at Kroger awhile back, and then they jumped to (I think) $2.49.

If I don't know for sure that they weren't picked green and magically ripened, I'm not interested. Made that mistake at Valu a few weeks back.

That was at the Kroger down there in good ol' PeeWee Valley-Anchorage (Hwy 146/Gene Snyder). I'm pretty sure it was NOT a Kroger "Plus" card deal as I saw no mention of it being one on the little sign with the price on it. Wasn't listed as a "sale" price either...just a little sign saying "Kentucky Grown" 'Vine Ripened Maters - Buck Forty Eight a pound. Damn nice looking 'Maters too.

I was toyin' with the idea of fightin' the crowd and going down to the St. Matt's farmers market on Saturday to check out what they had...but hell, if they are damn near double the price, I think I'll just stop back in at Kroger's when I'm down that way tomorrow.

I think if you wait a few more weeks, the price of tomatoes at farmers' markets will go down. It's still a little early for tomatoes. We've gotten a few in our csa (enough to whet our appetites for more), but they'll start coming in mass quantities by mid-August.

If you pick up a free copy of Louisville Edibles Sarah Frischner mentions a tomato auction in Henry County where seconds go for 3-6$ a bushel. I can't find my copy or I'd give you more info.
