Big Mac turns 40

by Robin Garr » Thu Sep 20, 2007 9:38 am

From the Fast Food News blog:

<table border="0" align="right" width="210"><tr><td><img src="http://www.foodfacts.info/blog/uploaded_images/mcd-big-mac-museum.jpg" border="1" align="right"></td></tr></table> Big Mac celebrates 40 years

McDonald's Big Mac sandwich was first served 40 years ago by its inventor Jim Delligatti (pictured).

To commemorate the creation, the Big Mac Museum Restaurant has opened in North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, just 40 miles north of where the first double burger, triple bun sandwich was served in Uniontown for 45 cents.

from USA Today:

<I>"The museum has it all: the world's largest Big Mac — 14 feet tall and 12 feet wide — a bronze bust of Delligatti, a high-tech global Big Mac map and wallpaper peppered the ad 'two-all-beef-patties-special sauce-lettuce-cheese-pickles-onions-on-a-sesame seed-bun.'

It took Delligatti, now 89, two years to convince McDonald's to allow him to serve up the sandwich. After the first day, he realized that two buns was too sloppy, so the middle bun was injected."</I>

By 1968, the Big Mac was on McDonald's menus nationwide. McDonald's sells 550 million Big Macs each year in over 100 countries.

Delligatti said he still eats an average of one Big Mac a week...and you can tell it's true from the photo!

Big Mac

by James Paul » Sat Sep 22, 2007 2:09 am

You know Ron, your plight resonates in me as well and for the life of me I can not figure out why. I can only guess that it is something burned deep
in my physic logical make up tearing at my mind to reopen my high school
memories.

I will say this but I hate to, the Big Mac is the best sandwich the place has.
1/4 pounder included.

There are no McDonald's here in Seymour. But early mornings in near by Wichita Falls have sometimes required a trip to McD's for a Sausage bisquit
and large coffee, in hopes that the latter of these will accidentally spill there by rendering me a millionaire.
Every days a holiday and every meals a feast !

I haven't had one of these in years ... maybe because I made a gazillion of them in high school/early college when I worked at McD's in Bowling Green. Ron hit it on the head calling it a "nutritional disaster!"

James I just noticed that you live in texas. what gives? are you a displaced Louisvillian, or go back and forth? I am currently exiled to the hinterlands of Northern Kentucky, but I am back in the 'ville at least 2 days a week for work and eating of course.

WHAT????? I was CERTAIN that McD's was EVERYWHERE. Every exit, every small town. Wow. You must have some beautiful scenery - I'm envious!

I used to *love* Big Macs, that is, until my palate grew up.

What I yearn for is the Big Mac done right. I too struggle with those once a year cravings for this nutritional disaster, but I think it would be worth it if only I could be served the perfect Big Mac. It won't happen at McDonald's, so I have to take mine home and deconstruct it, heat the nasty little patties, add pickles and more mayo/thousand island/sauce/ketchup/fat, maybe even toast the middle bun.

A quicker solution to this craving is to pull into the Dizzy Whiz at 2nd and St. Catherine. Made to order, this is the Big Mac as it should be. Though I still think it might be straight tartar sauce instead of thousand island.

I think Micky Ds must put something like crack in their little breakfast pancake sandwiches...the ones with the maple syrup chips. I don't know who hit on that idea but those are the bomb. :!: Artery clogging little ba!**%@! that they undoubtably are. I wish I could make them at home.

carla, yeah, I love those darn little fat-filled sweet breakfast sandwiches at mcd's. I pretend I don't know the fat count/calorie count.

big macs...yep, I have to have one of those every few months. it's my guilty/trashy pleasure.
