BBQ on a gyros!!!!

by Alison Hanover » Tue Jul 05, 2011 7:53 pm

Yesterday, whilst I was at the Overlook Restaurand, a guy came and asked for BBQ sauce on a gyros! Is he kidding? My son, said "Well, we don't really do that". He thought he wasn't going to place the rest of the order if he didn't do it, so he did it. I wouldn't have, and I won't. I don't care if he doesn't order anything. My gyroi are personal, and BBQ sauce on a gyros just won't cut it.

Can you imagine, the bbq sauce clinging to the lettuce, tomatoes and onion - nasty!!!

The food you serve at home to your friends and family is personal. The food you serve to a customer is business. (imo) Do your best to give your customers what they want (even if it squicks you out) and you'll never want for customers.

I'm going to definitely have to go with you on this one Allison, I think BBQ sauce would ruin the integrity of a gyro, and therefor give someone an incorrect interpretation of the food you're serving.Iit may not be a popular decision, but personally I think it's the right one. Though they do love some BBQ mutton down here in KY

Integrity? I want my banker to have integrity - when I buy food I wouldn't want to be told how I have to eat it. As noted in the previous thread - The Overlook isn't "fine dining".

BBQ on a gyro? Why not ketchup and mustard? Heck, I'd like a gyro minus the pita and tzatziki, add ground beef and american cheese and mayo and put it on a kaiser roll. You'll do that right? I am the customer and I know what is best on my gyro!

I'm telling you, I am opening a restaurant called "A La Carte" which will feature nothing but ingredients on the menu and the customers can just build whatever horrid monstrosity they think is food. I'll charge a flat rate of $12.99 per entree and just let them go to town. Seems to be what people want. Best part, I don't have to pay a chef's salary!

Rant over. Thank you, is late.

Would it be an integrity violation if you gave the dude a gyro and let him put his own BBQ sauce on it?

A gyro with BBQ sauce is no longer a gyro, and it is up to the restaurant to decide if they should serve you a product of questionable taste that may ultimately reflect poorly on them, even if it's not their fault. In your mind you may say BBQ and gyro's sound great together, but what if it ends up being awful?
You might not complain and hold it against the restaurant, but a lot of people would. And thus is the problem and the double edged sword. You're screwed if you accept a request like that and the customer doesn't like it, and you're screwed if you tell them no because people feel entitled to tell people that cook professionally how to cook because they're the customers spending their money.
It's a lose/lose situation, and I personally tend to err with the person cooking my food, if I want something they don't make I'll go somewhere that has it or make it myself. There is a reason these people cook professionally and since I don't typically eat at chains, it's not because they have nothing better to do with their life.

And fine dining has nothing to do with food quality, if anything you can find restaurants of similar food quality where everything is made from scratch and broken down in house at some real hole in the walls, all it takes is a chef that cares and is passionate about what they do.

If you left out the tomato, lettuce, cabbage, etc, and just had shaved lamb, onions, bbq sauce on pita ...that would be pretty darned tasty. Just make the guy his Gyro and discreetly leave a bottle of bbq sauce within his reach. Then he can do whatever he wants with it.

Sorry, Christina, BBQ on a gyros is never going to happen on my watch.

Ryan, Ronnie, thank you dudes.
Mark, my initial post was misleading, this did not happen at the Overlook , it happened at my business, whilst I was at the Overlook.

:D and that, Steve, is perfectly fine, ketchup belongs on a hot dog.

If it's your place serve 'em anyway you want. I was having a hard time getting my head around getting a gyro at "The Overlook". Carry on.
