Overlook - fine dining it isn't!!

by Alison Hanover » Tue Jul 05, 2011 2:37 pm

On a whim, Joe and I decided to go to the Overlook for dinner. A.J.'s was in the capable hands of our son, Alex and friend Devin. What a disappointment!

The carpet was stained badly and in need of replacing. The whole place looked in need of an overhaul. It was very busy, but we were led to a table with a view. We ordered drinks, and the combo appetizer. I decided to have the chicken livers with baked potato and vegetable of the day which was carrots. Joe had the Beef Manhattan
The combo appetizer was adequate, potato skins, mushrooms, and fried pickles. It was what you can get at any other place. My chicken livers were plentiful and tasted fine, the carrots, however, were canned. The baked potato was more like a boiled in the skin potato and came with two pats of butter and a container of sour cream. Joe's sandwich tasted ok but looked terrible.
Service was very friendly but extremely spotty. I sat for 8 minutes with an empty glass, she only asked if I wanted another drink when she brought the entrees out. We had to wait for our dinner rolls, when I asked if we got dinner rolls, she said they were in the over.
The servers were all wearing T shirts which read on the back. "fine dining on the Ohio" or something like that.
We took our drinks down the Walters Pub to enjoy the view. I was hoping to get a coffee, but they didn't serve coffee downstairs. So, we finished our drinks and left.

The view - amazing, but "fine dining" it ain't. Just what you would get at a million other places.
We will probably take our friends there from England, but we will eat at Walter's.

Thanks for the report Alison. I have not been since there was a change of ownership perhaps a year ago. I had high hopes that new blood would make some much needed changes, but apparently such is not the case.

We took my mom there for dinner last fall, and it struck me as much improved over previous management regimes. "Fine" dining does seem a bit of a stretch. I'd call it comfort food with one hell of a good view.

Most importantly, Walter's has craft beer on tap!

We went about two years ago, and felt the same way when we left as you did. I just didn't feel the place was very clean. The food to me was along the lines of Blue Boar before it closed, at least they can't mess the view up!!! It is a wonderful spot to be outside and enjoy the beauty surrounding it I must say, but will we be back for the food, probably not..

My wife and I got out of town for a couple of days about a month ago and stayed just up the road from the Overlook at the Leavenworth Inn. The Inn was great ( we even had breakfast our last morning there with a 99 year old woman from Louisville who knew my wife's grandmother back in the 40's), but the Overlook didn't provide anything nearly as remarkable. Great view, mediocre food. The shrimp I had was about the same as you'd get at Captain D's. Not exactly fine dining.

My wife and I will go back to the Leavenworth at some point, but not the Overlook.

Yeah, I have friends coming from the UK at the end of August, so we will go there for a pizza, but we will go to the pub underneath, not the restaurant. As you say, the view is quite stunning, and I am sure they will enjoy it. I just think it is such a shame, the potential is incredible if only they could get the decor and food to match up to the view!!

Maybe someone should submit them for the Kitchen Nightmares show?
