Looks like Bea opened restaurant #2 in Provincetown, MA. Congratulations and bring back the Seafood Ceviche to Louisville!

Congrats and best wishes to Bea! I hope this venture thrives. That said, I think she sold her ownership in El Mundo to her business partner a year or so ago ... Didn't she? Correct me if I'm wrong and I'll erase this fast. ;)

Actually she had enough faith in my husband to take on this venture. Mike took over the line in El Mundo after we returned from Waskesiu, Sask a few years ago. We bought into the biz 2 years October.
Mike is a CIA Hyde Park Grad, and we moved here to be closer to my family (but not toooooo close, don't wanna go from SF to Fancy Farm, Sorry). So long story short, Bea will be back to winter over in Louisville. She is still El Mundo, and so is Mike. 16 years and counting.

Thanks for clarifying that, Nora! As usual, my memory was hooked partway into reality but not completely so.

I remember El Mundo had either just opened when we moved back to Louisville from NYC or was just about to do so. I do remember Mary taking a big bunch of garden cilantro down there in the summer of '94 and bartering it with Mike? Pete? Lourdes? Someone, anyway, for a couple of lunches. We were living on my book advance then, and bartering was GOOD.

Shelby, in Louisville, and I am assuming in P-town, has always been a class act. Wish her well.

Wouldn't know, guess it wasn't Mike, since he started there post Blue Dog and pre- my happy years at North End. But I do know I lovvvve the barter. So if Mary's got the Cilantro, I've got the time. And yes, dear Shelby is keeping it real at the p-town location. I'm so ready to try a lobster soft taco.
And whilst on the subject, Mike's Prickly Pear Cheesecake with the White Chocolate Mexican Brandy Sauce is pretty as well as delicious...Fly your Pink Freak Flag Cheesecake. Fly.

On a side note, I love El mundo...it's one of my favorite restaurants in the city. However, my only beef is, why do you serve those horrible chips?

Gee thanks Sue! Sorry, we don't have the space for a fryer that could put out the volume of chips that we need. The kitchen in P-town does, and they get to do all sorts of fun fancy things that we wish we had the space to do in Louisville. We go through alot, and that's the only brand that doesn't get crushed to dust before we can use them. If we had our 'druthers, we'd be making the tortillas as well. Just take heart in the fact that everything else is made there in house. The chile sauces, the hot sauces, the chipotle aioli, chile pot de creme, etc, etc, etc.

Trust me, I love the place Nora, and eat there at least once a week and that is my only gripe. Everything is always great, and the bf said you probably had no room for a fryer just wish there was a better alternative.
