48 hours in Louisville, Kentucky

by JustinHammond » Fri Jul 01, 2011 10:16 am

LA Times Article

http://www.latimes.com/travel/sns-rt-us ... 0881.story

Some one-third of the world's bourbon is made in Kentucky

I thought it was more like 90%.

Otherwise, pretty good article.

In terms of quantity, I believe there's an ocean of cheap well bourbon made in places like Illinois and New Jersey, but certainly Kentucky is the world's epicenter of the tasty spirit, and the out-of-context statistic seems misleading.
Otherwise, pretty good article.

I'm glad to have the national publicity, but it struck me as a fairly crappy article, superficial and careless. I don't want to be a curmudgeon, though ...

I found in more in depth then most articles about Louisville. It is a pretty jammed packed schedule for only 48 hours, with lots of local places and no mention of 4th St Live.

The failure to mention 4th St Live is excellent, I'll grant. But ... Proof, 732 and Toast? Most of the city's restaurants are on East Market and Main? 48-hour visit with the first night staying in your hotel and the next day spent in Bardstown?

Ida know. Like I said, I don't want to be Mr. Curmudgeon, but in my mind, the 48-hour visit genre ought to serve up more variety.

Totally agree, Mr. C. I like that those establishments are getting mention and praise, but this article bored me. It reads like the writer didn't even visit here. The NYT one from a couple months ago was wayyy better. But I'm glad for this kind of stuff, all the same. Thanks for pointing it out, Justin.

I read the article like it was about 48 hours in downtown. 48 hours isn't enought time to see/do almost any city when the burbs are considered. That said, Proof and Social are always on the top of my list for out of town guests. Maybe Wild Eggs or North End for the breakfast vs. Toast and adding a pub crawl on Bardstown/Baxter would have improved the schedule, but 48 hours are tight.

I was okay with the article, but was unaware that Louisville had such a copious number of piano bars.

Finish the night with a drink at one of the city's piano bars[.]

Haha, too true. Many seasoned Louisvillians, myself included, would have a hard time coming up with exactly where to send someone who asked for a piano bar. I feel bad for a visitor who, on guidance from this article, approaches one of us looking for that sort of thing. "Ummmm?"

Rick Bartlett plays at Buck's, but no one would call Buck's a piano bar. The Brown Hotel Bar has a piano that plays itself, and you can sit around it and have drinks; occasionally there's a live pianist. What else is there, either in downtown or close by (since that's what the article focuses on when it's not distillery-hopping)?

Well, on the plus side it is a much nicer portrayal of the City than the other '48 hour' stories airing on cable - there are an awful lot of episodes of 'The First 48' that take place here.

It could have been much worse...

It could have been 48 hours on Hurstbourne Parkway!

*with a nod / pass given to locals and faves like Joe's OK bayou, Thai Orchid, Jason's Deli, Shah's Mongolian Grill, Carraba's (their grilled pork chop will give lots of local indies a run for their money), Limestone, Home Run Burger, and Z's.

I get your gist but a couple of those you mentioned would certainly give some of the ones used in the article a run for their money. Especially Z's and Limestone! Also for a quick meal Home Run Burger is pretty darn good, especially a lot better than any of the chain places locally.
