Question for the beer experts

by Mike Hardin » Tue Jun 28, 2011 3:46 pm

I just picked up a bottle each of NABC Naughty Girl and Hoptimus. I'm headed to Germany and want to take these with me. Since they're bottled cold, is this beer going to make it there without going bad? What's the best way to transport these?

It will be fine. It sets at room temp long before hitting the fridges in the liquor stores. I'm pretty sure checked baggage is your only option for taking beer on a plane, so good luck with getting to drink it in Germany. At worst your clothes will be hoppy fresh when you get there.

All beer is bottled cold, damn near impossible to do it any other way. Wrap them in bubble wrap, tape tight and place each bottle in a zip top bag large enough to hold the contents should anything break. Place in checked bag with lots of padding (clothes). I've carried a lot of beer this way with no breakage.

Note also that waterproof camping/outdoors bags work fro the inside out, too. I use the same blue bags used to keep my clothes dry during biking outings, follow Dave's bubble-wrapping plan, squeeze out the air, lock up tight, and relax.

Thanks for the tips. Roger, I spoke to someone last night at NABC and they were very helpful. I keep getting a funny reaction: 'You're taking beer TO Germany?" I just want to have a beer I know I'll like and I've assured the Germans that these beers will easily stand up to theirs.

They wont like them.

Well, I shouldnt say that, Im sure there are some germans with open minds about beer.

Ive seen too many comments about German attitude towards Belgian beer to think that very many will appreciate Naughty Girl.

No clue what they will think of Hoptimus.

Personally, I think that they probably wont like them is the best reason to take them. :D

Let us know the reaction, this is one of those times where I hope Im wrong.

I often think of the bumper stickers they sell at Gasthaus: You can always tell a German, you just can't tell him much.
