Fried Shrimp Heads

by Adrian Baldwin » Mon Jun 27, 2011 12:25 pm

...I've seen the episode on FN 'Best thing I Ever Ate' a few times where Duff enjoys this interesting dish...

...is there anywhere to get that around here? I quick google says that many sushi joints will serve the heads fried, along w/ the Amaebi (Sweet Shrimp) nigiri/sashimi, but it's typically something you have to ask for, that's not on the menu.

Anyone ever had these, or know a place in Louisville that will serve them?

Sorry, but I don't have any leads for Louisville.

If you are ever in the Lexington area, I would suggest you try Sugano Japanese. They serve fish heads and a lot of other "exotic" offerings. They also feature some of the best sushi in the state, possibly the region; all in my opinion, of course!

I'm almost never there, but I had occasion to drive down twice this month. Happily went over that way at lunch time, and daing! Open for dinner only.

I consoled myself at Rick's White Light DIner in Frankfort instead ...

No, you may be thinking of Seki before it changed ownership. It used be reservation only and Mrs. Seki was kind of abrasive.

Sugano is in a seedy strip mall near Eastland Parkway. It's like the most humble digs ever - located between a taquiera and a biker bar. The food is second to none, however. Get there early as Sugano san is the only sushi chef. EVERYTHING is made in-house other than the soy sauce.

I've worked myself into a tizzy. Please get there as soon as possible!

Shucks, Robin. It's a sushi snob's dream... but there is absolutely no pretension. I just hope Guy Fieri doesn't show up and turn it into a circus.

Mrs. Seki died a couple of years ago. Mr. Seki couldn't deal with the loss and committed suicide by jumping off of Highbridge. I think he did so last year.

That's too bad about Seki..

...but yeah, that's the place I'm thinking of. I've heard some funny stories about incidents at that place dealing with them. The food was so good though, most people seemed to just laugh it off.

Almost all sushi joints have them due to the preparation of amaebi. But none of them automatically serve them because most Americans don't want to eat fried shrimp heads. In some places I've been it is automatic. You order the amaebi, you get the fried shrimp heads. All you have to do is ask and odds are you'll get them. The last time I was at Sapporo a buddy and I asked for shrimp heads and got them.
