NY bans cutting the cheese

Greenmarket Vendors Say Cheese Slicing Ban Stinks

Cheese vendors at NY farmer's markets cant cut the cheese and sell it any more. They have to have it prepackaged. What are the local regs on this?

Also, the part requiring them to cut samples with a plastic knife is funny.

It's just another example of a Nanny State making rules that are not only unnecessary but also harmful to small businesses! On top of that it hurts the quality of the product being sold and as noted in the article cause additional waste and loss of product.

My favorite quote from the comments on the article was this one:
I have a suggestion: stop electing Democrats. Do you get it yet?

Another example of keeping the little guy down. Every year new regulations pop up that seem to support corporate business and hurt independents. It makes me wonder if there has been some alarming rise of food borne illness incidents or if there is just a rapid rise in idiot proofing the food service industry. Are these regulations actually making things safer or just creating a false sense of security.
I’ll regret this tomorrow…

I vote for "creating a false sense of security."

see also: use of gloves, usually the improper use of gloves. Clean hands are fine, IMHO.

Completely off topic, but in the training class I went to one chef asked, "Can you tell me why my clean AMERICAN hands are not acceptable, but these gloves that come stuffed in a box from who knows WHERE are acceptable? Do you know how the gloves are manufactured?"

crickets

Back on topic. I love cheese. One of the best events of recent years was the Cheese Festival held in Louisville.
