Farmers market price on tomatoes

by Matthew D » Sat Jun 25, 2011 7:17 pm

Was wondering if anyone could report back on prices they've paid recently at farmers markets for tomatoes.

Funny thing is, I bought a couple today but don't have a scale to weigh them on. I feel like I might have overpaid for them, and seeing as I'm looking to make a big batch of salsa for a holiday party, I'm just hoping to get a sense of the going rate. I'm not going to make salsa with taste-like-nothing Kroger tomatoes, but I'm also worried about the pocketbook hit based on the $5 I spent today for five rather small tomatoes.

It's early in the season for tomatoes, right?
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

Very early. At this point, farmers' market pricing is likely to reflect rarity. The old conventional wisdom is "Plant tomatoes on Derby Day, harvest after the Fourth of July." In our experience, further into July, around July 10-15, is more likely for a reliable harvest, although you'll get an occasional outlier. Also, some hybrids are bred for early ripening, but if you're looking for quality heirlooms, you just won't get them this early.
