Friday is for fish

by Helen Claiborne » Fri Jun 17, 2011 4:41 pm

Howdy,

I was in the area and I stopped at Kayrouz Cafe (located at 3801 Willis Ave in St. Matthews, near Greater's Ice cream) for their fish on Friday meal. I ordered the cod, fried of course, rye bread and, a special treat, french fries. I was not disappointed. The plate arrived with fish and fries pipping hot! It's always that way for me at Kayrouz Cafe. The cod was cooked crispy on the outside and tender inside. The fries were cooked perfectly, so I didn't indulge in any guilt while devoring them. I wanted to make a fish sandwich with the soft rye bread, but the fish disappered too fast, the tarter sauce is so good. I had arrived at an "off" time, too late for lunch and too early for dinner. I treasure restaurants that I can visit at any time and still get a great meal, Kayrouz is one of those for me. :
As always, friendly and efficent service. :D

Very nice review and picture of a good neighborhood spot that often gets overlooked in our discussions. Thanks, Helen, for taking the time to post such a worthy report. :)

We like Kayrouz a lot, mainly because it's right in the neighborhood and we enjoy drinking Bourbon Barrel stouts out front.

However, I think they are very hit-or-miss. Depending on what you choose, the food ranges from excellent to not-very-good.

That being said, I have had their fish and it is indeed good. It's been a while, but I remember the tartar sauce being very interesting.

I also think that, consistently, they make one of the best burgers in the city. When prepared proportionately, their Reuben is also very solid.
