Sam Adams; "Mega Swill" or a good mass produced brew?

by Jeff T » Thu Jun 16, 2011 11:38 pm

Their advertising seems informative instead of social hype. It seems they take pride in their craft with innovations like special glassware for different beers, seasonal offerings and the like. A quality mass produced beer or just another bottle of nothing?

Overrated MASS produced brew, hands down. IMHO, they're a notch, maybe two, above swill

A mass produced beer of quality and commitment. While I don't care for some of there seasonal offerings, most are solid to excellent.

What I would have said. Worth noting that it also started as a local brew in Boston and made good by outdoing the megas with a decent tasting beer.

Is Sierra Nevada a mega now? Just askin'.

I've never been a big "Sam" fan...Most of it doesn't agree with my palette and some of their concoctions just strike me as plain goofy (Cherry Wheat, Blackberry Witbier, etc). That said I have developed a mild affinity for the Lattitude 48 IPA and the Nobel Pils. My only issue with either is that I have found the bottles to routinely be overly carbonated.

What I thought. SNPA is always a good default beer at a place that doesn't have anything more "artisanal." 8)

That is pretty much my thoughts about Sam Adams.

Their seasonals are borderline bad, but the original is pretty tasty and I quite enjoy their Imperial series.

To call Sam Adams mega-swill would be to base a conclusion solely on size. They have done an excellent job grabbing a share of the market while staying "true" to their product. I'm not a fan of everything they put out (that Cherry whatever is behind horrible), do enjoy a few (really like the Noble Pils), and won't ever complain if that's what I'm left drinking.

Aren't they the biggest domestic brewer remaining after the international takeover of the true "domestic" swillers?
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

True

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.

I totally agree. I asked if they were a "mega" now, based on their growth and nationwide distribution. I remember when they were a local micro!

But the word "swill" did not appear anywhere in my post, or in Dave's and my responses praising it.

Most people do not realize that Samuel Adams is brewed in Cincinnati. The Jamaica Plain facility is merely a pilot brewery/tourist destination.
