Malware/virus on Oakroom Website?

by Robin Garr » Thu Jun 16, 2011 8:10 am

Whoa! I was trying to get to the Oakroom Website to check out contact info to add to an announcement, and Google Chrome caught me up short with a big red stop sign and scary malware notice:

Warning: Something's Not Right Here!
www.theoakroomlouisville.com contains malware. Your computer might catch a virus if you visit this site.
Google has found malicious software may be installed onto your computer if you proceed. If you've visited this site in the past or you trust this site, it's possible that it has just recently been compromised by a hacker. You should not proceed, and perhaps try again tomorrow or go somewhere else.
We have already notified www.theoakroomlouisville.com that we found malware on the site. For more about the problems found on www.theoakroomlouisville.com, visit the Google Safe Browsing diagnostic page.

If you understand that visiting this site may harm your computer, proceed anyway.

Any other browsers posting similar warnings? I'd be wary of checking in, in any case, until this clears up.

It could be multiple things. Google has a tendency to err on the side of caution to the point where it becomes difficult to use(both the search engine and chrome.) There could just be something in the body of the page that it's flagging as bad, even though it isn't.

When it comes to computers it's somewhat disturbing how peoples brains shut down. Dealing with training up people of all ages to use various systems has taught me that there's some kind of shutoff that happens when they sit down in front of a computer. Not everyone is like that obviously, but there seems to be a significant number out there that will click those links and hit OK without ever actually checking to see what's going on.

The lulzsec hacks over the past week have been interesting to follow, it's a mix of actual breaking into systems and simple denial of service attacks to take down sites. I've browsed through some of the stuff they've gotten hold of, some of it's fairly mundane, but there's a fair bit of technical stuff that shouldn't be exposed to the web.

And there are no problems loading the page in firefox 4 or IE8.

I agree, it must be a bug that only affects MAC's. No problems at all using Windows 7, IE9 and Norton Internet Security.

I get the Google warning using Firefox, but not with Konqueror (KDE browser on Suse Linux).

My guess is that it's some kind of adware that's in a gray area: Not true malware but spammy/intrusive enough that the programmers for Firefox and Chrome consider it over the line. If I were the Seelbach management, I'd want a word with my Web designers, because it doesn't really reflect well on the institution to have anything even gently sketchy on its public website. It would be sort of like having women who looked like prostitutes hanging around the lobby. Even if they weren't really in the business, it would probably put off the kind of clientele that they would prefer to attract.
