Discussion of Robin Garr's Frascelli's review

Frascelli's offers a taste of New York in Crestwood
Voice-Tribune review by Robin Garr

Pizza! It’s what’s for lunch, and what’s for dinner too. You can even enjoy it as breakfast, cold from the fridge or reconstituted in the oven. You can make it healthy with light veggies and skimpy cheese; or you can load it up with a meat lover’s special, double down on the cheese, and give a cardiologist nightmares.

Pizza! St. Matthews is awash in pizzerias these days, and I expect that’s because its burgeoning nightspot scene has become a rival to the metro’s other busy night-life zones, and all that boozy frolicking calls for something cheesy, salty and substantial that’s available late.

But pizza isn’t all about tamping down an evening’s excesses. For this week’s report, let’s move out the road to suburban Crestwood, where Frascelli’s provides a taste of New York City Italian-American fare – including pizza – with a friendly Kentucky accent.

Frascelli’s, now in its second location in Crestwood Station, boasts spacious quarters, with a high cathedral ceiling and wood-look tables and comfy chairs that allow plenty of room to spread out with kids and family. Only those over 21 are allowed in the back room bar, past a “New York City This Exit” sign. ...

We live a mile or two from Fraschelli's and have been there often. Our "take" is that while nothing they do (pizza, sandwiches, etc) would ever be considered the "best in town", everything the do is certainly quite satisfactory. For those of us out here in the hinterlands, it's certainly an acceptable dining option as it is really the only true "independent" pizza.

I think they may have also come under new management. They seemed much more friendly and welcoming in the new place. In the original location, on the other side and farther back in the same shopping center, staff attitude usually gave more of an "authentic New York experience." ;)

My comments about Frascelli's would basically echo Steve's (supra)...adequate for the OC, but there are probably better options if you venture into Louisville....good deli sandwiches, but (IMO) they still take a back seat to places like Stevens & Stevens...I haven't been there since the new management took over, so perhaps time to revisit.

Don't forget about Steve-O's! I'd put it head and shoulders above Frascelli's in all categories. We like the pizza at Frascelli's but Steve-O's is still the standard to beat out in the OC.

The original Frascelli's was back at the back of the shopping center on the other side. They moved, I dunno, a year or two ago. I don't know that they have new management, but service was a lot more friendly and courteous now than when they were in the former location, where I always felt like the people behind the counters would just as soon not have customers there bothering them.

That's all I got. :?

No idea about the owners and/or new management...but no second location, still right there beside the Chase bank (note: They USED to be located in the back of the same plaza, that may be where the confusion about two locations resides). Just as a "helpful hint" to anyone stopping in, if you order a small pizza (or two smalls in lieu of a large) you will be much happier. Frascelli's suffers from that "thang" that so many other places stuggle with...That being a soggy crust in the center of a large pie. Also, just as an aside, all of their deli meats are Boars Head products, which I've always found to be a cut above the run of the mill deli meat.

BTW, Hwy 146 in Oldham County is our version of "Restaurant Row"...Starting at the county line and going north, we've got Juicy's BBQ, Texicans BBQ, Frascelli's, some Tex-Mex place next door to Frascelli's, some Asian place next door to the Tex-Mex place...on up the road toward La Grange we've got Steve O's...IN LaGrange (a block off Hwy 146) we've got the Red Pepper Deli and The Irish Rover Too and we can't forget Big R's BBQ right down the block...Yep, just a virtual plethora of Good Eats. :D
