Wisconsin governor, MillerCoors gang up on craft beer

by Robin Garr » Tue Jun 14, 2011 11:27 am

Interesting story ... instructive and worrisome. Also funny, since Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is nationally much better known for his efforts to crush union labor than small brewers.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s War On Craft Beer
By Alex Seitz-Wald
ThinkProgress.org

Tucked into Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s (R) much-discussed budget was a little-noticed provision to overhaul the state’s regulation of the beer industry. In a state long associated with beer, the provision will make it much more difficult for the Wisconsin’s burgeoning craft breweries to operate and expand their business by barring them from selling directly to restaurants and liquor stores, and preventing them from selling their own product onsite.

The new provision treats craft brewers — the 60 of whom make up just 5 percent of the beer market in Wisconsin — like corporate mega-brewers, forcing them to use a wholesale distributor to market their product. Under the provision, it would be illegal, for instance, for a small brewer located near a restaurant to walk next door to deliver a case of beer. They’ll have to hire a middle man to do it instead.

But more noteworthy than the provision itself is how it was enacted. The provision was quietly slipped in the massive budget legislation without any consultation from independent craft brewers, who are justifiably outraged by it. One group that clearly did have input, however, is one of the world’s largest beer makers — MillerCoors:

Sounds like business as usual for the mega corporation! Try to make it as hard as possible for small businesses to compete. Very similar to the problems the wine industry has (notably in Kentucky). All are really does is make them look like bullies, it really doesn't help them in the long run.

Here are some related threads. Just keep in mind that the government is always the friend of large vested interests. A bigger government just takes it to a higher level.

Excellent film about the beer industry.

From website:

In America, size matters. The bigger you are, the more power you have, especially in the business world.Director Anat Baron takes you on a no holds barred exploration of the U.S. beer industry that ultimately reveals the truth behind the label of your favorite beer. Told from an insider’s perspective, the film goes behind the scenes of the daily battles and all out wars that dominate one of America’s favorite industries.

Beer Wars begins as the corporate behemoths are being challenged by small, independent brewers who are shunning the status quo and creating innovative new beers. The story is told through 2 of these entrepreneurs – Sam and Rhonda – battling the might and tactics of Corporate America. We witness their struggle to achieve their American Dream in an industry dominated by powerful corporations unwilling to cede an inch.

This contemporary David and Goliath story is ultimately about keeping your integrity (and your family’s home) in the face of temptation. Beer Wars is a revealing and entertaining journey that provides unexpected and surprising turns and promises to change the world’s opinion on those infamous 99 bottles of beer on the wall.

I would argue that it totally helps them in the long run, are you crazy? It makes them look like assholes, (which they are) but it definitely helps them keep better/competing products out of the market.

You had to go and do it didn't you Robin ? You mentioned the name "Gov. Scott Walker". NOW my freaking blood pressure is pegged for the rest of the day, that and now I'll probably spend the rest of the afternoon frothing at the mouth and torturing small animals. I positively DESPISE...I LOATH this asshat...even before all this beer stuff.

A weird thing.

When a politician tries to change a law from A to B they get roundly criticized (and rightly so, in this case).

When law B has been in effect in another state forever, nothing is said about their politicians.

EVERY state politician in KY should be getting the same abuse heaped upon them. As far as I know, none have attempted to change the law. In fact, from some details Ive seen elsewhere (but who knows what the final version will look like) KY's law will probably still be worse than WI's even if it passes.

Edit: If any of you on this thread really hate what Walker is doing, here is my suggested response: call up your KY (assuming you are in KY) state rep and state senator and ask them to change KY's law to match what Wisconsin's law currently is. Especially so if your state rep is a Democrat, as this gives them the chance to poke a stick in a GOP governor's eye. With the democratic majority in the house, they could pass it for pure solidarity with the WI dems reasons. And if they refuse to do it, you can call them a Walker-lover. Preferably publicly.

Maybe this sheds some light on why we can't get a freakin' Yuengling in this town.

Because we get better beer?

Or, more likely, because Pennsylvania buys it all.

Yuengling, for their size, has a very tiny distribution area. Places much closer to than here cant get them either. Self-distribution laws have little effect on out of state brewers.

I had Yuengling at a little Italian-American joint in Cape Canaveral, but of course, the Florida Atlantic Coast pretty much IS New York, New Jersey and Pennsy.

Also, Yuengling has a brewery in Florida, so its a local there.
