Velocity gently bashes I Ching

by Robin Garr » Sat Sep 15, 2007 9:15 am

In what may be a first for Velocity, which generally runs unfailingly positive, "see no evil" reviews, Lisa Hornung gently bashes I Ching in St. Matthews in a brief 242-word review this week, declaring that she "wasn't impressed" with a Drunken Chicken dish, which she described thus: "I wasn't impressed. The flavor and color were pretty bland -- like chicken noodle soup without the broth. Once I added some soy sauce to it, it tasted better, but not by much. I wished I'd had the Kung Pao. The service was friendly and attentive, but overall, it wasn't the fashionable dining experience I was expecting."

She also misspells the restaurant's name (it's I Ching, not "iChing"), and in buying into a company press release that declares it "unique," seems unaware that it's very similar to Yang Kee Noodle and that both are apparent imitations of P.F. Chang's lower-budget Pei Wei.

The Veolicty restaurant "reviews" are notable for the uselessness. I'm not a fan of the "I don't know much about food, but I know what I like" review. Using that rationale, I'd be qualified to review ballets.

So, Ron, what's your take on Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake?

I had my worst pseudo chinese food ever at that place, hot and sour soup that basically was like drinking salt water. Feh !

The five colors darken the eye
The five sounds will deaden the ear
The five flavors weary the taste
Chasing the beasts of the field
Will drive a man mad
The goods that are hard to procure
Are hobbles that slow walking feet

So the wise man will do
What his belly dictates
And never the sight of his eyes
Thus he will choose this but not that

Has anyone ever been to the one in Lexington? If they were anything like the one here then I don't understand how they managed to stay open for so long.

Maybe because in Lexington, there is no Yang Kee Noodle nearby to compare it to, and perhaps (except for Japanese) not nearly as much serious Asian?

never tried it...but we had a pretty lame meal last week at Yang Kee. It's always been a favorite, but the pad thai had a sour taste (no sweetness) and was too salty like perhaps they used too much fish sauce. My daughter's kung pao chicken tasted rubbery and the sauce had an unusual grittiness. Neither of us finished our meal and we were really disappointed.

My last meal at Yang Kee was notably worse than previous visits. I think the place has gone downhill a bit. My pad thai was overcooked, mushy noodles swimming in a gloppy sweet sauce.
