Who has the best sushi in town?

I always liked Sake Blue, but haven't been in a while. What's your favorite place for sushi?

1. Tokyo
2. Hiko-a-mon
3. Maido
4. Sapporo

Too many to name all the good ones - these are my favorites with 95% of my sushi intake coming from Tokyo.

Everything Mark mentioned, for sure, but the best sushi I've ever eaten has been from Oishi. It's unbelievable - truly a must-try if you've never had it. I've gotten carry-out several times and I'm always blown away by it.

I'm pretty much on board with Mark and Jackie. I wasn't blown away by Hiko-A-Mon, but certainly thought it was good. Tokyo and Sapporo are definitely two of the class acts. Maido was perhaps my first love when Toki was there, but I haven't done a review since she left; which also raises her Dragon King's Daughter as another worth a mention. Oh, yeah, and Wild Ginger isn't too shabby in the sushi department, either.

I have yet to really hit on sushi, which for me means sashimi and particularly Chirashi, in Louisville which really hits it out of the park, but I have found little enclaves of Japanese cuisine that have been wonderful.

I find Hiko-A-Mon to be great for Izakaya style pub food. If you stay in the appetizers section of the menu along with the noodle dishes, as well as sake, beer and the best selection of Sochu in the city. You can have a rockin' good time.

Maido's Happy Hour along with the simpler more Japanese homestyle dishes that Toki originated there are still wonderful and a bargain.

And Dragon King's Daughter's late night happy hour is one of the great unsung hero's of the restaurant world. At 11pm when you're hungry you have a choice of burgers and fries, or wonderful fresh rolls and sushi prepared at a discount until 12pm. It's a fantastic alternative. And it's on Everyday!

I have heard wonderful things about Tokyo and hope to be able to try them soon. I would love to find that Jewel Box of a Japanese restaurant that is quietly zen and produces an authentic product. I look forward to trying them out, but if you haven't given these other restaurants a try, please do.

I agree with the list so far, and must add Wild Ginger....although I must laugh every time I go there because Sapparo is at the other end of that same block...... 8)

For consistency and quality Sapporo on Btown gets my vote. We like Sapporo on fourth street for the beautiful outdoor patio, but it seems as if the consistency of the rolls (what's supposed to be on them and how well they're wrapped) varies too much. We've been to them all and always levitate back to Sapporo (Btown). my two pesos....

I mostly eat sashimi but I've been able to introduce my kids to sushi by letting them try a roll that is deep fried.

I went with my friend to a local joint near the Jersey Shore a few weeks ago and noticed they didn't have any rolls that were cooked.

Are cooked rolls around other places?

They fry them pretty quick and some of the fish is not cooked all the way through. I really like them.

do any of these places offer the non-salted/non-pickled version of mackerel, or any of the other "shiny, oily" sashimi, like the one that is sometimes called "kingfish?" I'm looking for them in their uncured, unsalted forms. I have a hard time finding these consistently at sushi places, but they are my favorite. I've read that mackerel spoils quickly, and that is why it's usually cured. But I've eaten it uncured at a few KY places before (Tomo in Lexington, I remember) and it has always tasted great. But it's not always on the menu. What's the deal?

I'm curious about this, too. I've definitely noticed the pickling of fish from the carry-out sashimi I've gotten from grocery stores and it's not so prominent at the restaurants, yet I've detected it at times. There have also been times that I have not detected it but that could be attributable to the fact that I'm usually pickling my taste buds with alcohol when I dine in? I'd love to know the skinny.
