Norton Common's getting NY Style pizza joint

by Heather Y » Thu May 26, 2011 8:32 pm

It was announced to the resident's of Norton Commons today to expect the opening of a NY style pizza joint on July 1st! It will replace Big Ben Cafe on Meeting Street.

I have included the link. http://www.johnnyspizza.com/home.php

Btw it is a chain!

Pictures on the menu don't look like what I envision N.Y. pizza to be...but what the hell, I'll give 'em a try. Chain or not, it's likely not any worse than some of the ballyhooed "local" pizza around here.

I agree that the photos don't exactly draw me in - if I'm there some afternoon I may try a slice.

I certainly agree that the pizza in the pictures certain doesn't look like what I would expect from a NY style pizza. Even though they got their start in New York according to the history they don't have anything anywhere near there now which also sounds quite strange. They also have many items that are not pizza which is also very unusual for a true pizza place.

They certainly are tempting fate coming to Louisville where we have so many great independent pizza places. Only time will tell how well they succeed.

5 minutes of research via my pre-Star Trek non-smart-phone computer....

It would appear the "chain" (more or less) got it's start in Hot-Lanta, where it seems like there is a "Johnny's" on every street corner..."Urbanspoon" reviews reveal an average "like" factor in the high 60%'s to low "70%'s". Reading the reviews it sounds like the place serves up a pie somewhere between Papa John's and Wicks...which if you are into that kinda thing is fine. Kinda like the "Sonic" of pizza joints. The pies seem like they cover the usual cast of characters but they did manage to leave room for all those goofier-than-sh** pies the kids go for these days (food for another thread perhaps)...

Again, I'll give 'em a try but jeez...when ya got a place like Coals in town, what's the point.

I tried to Woo the DiOrio's guys to NC, but they decided they had enough on their plate in St. Matthews . (no pun intended).

Too bad they wouldn't "bite" on that idea! My guess is it would've been much better than what you're going to get.

This place seems far from any true NY style pizza joint I am familiar with; much more in line with Snappy Tomato Pizza.

I won't pre-judge, but if I'm over that way, I've probably been in Costco's. HUGE and decently yummy (for what it is) piece of pizza for cheap! (I can share it with my two dd's and we're all full!)
