Restaurants near Kosair

by Megan Watts » Fri May 20, 2011 2:51 pm

I asked this on another forum..but it might get more traffic here. What restaurants are within walking distance from Kosair Downtown? I'm sure I can make my husband my minion to go get us food while our little one stays there for about a day and night. And I can't bear the thought of eating McDonald's for 4 meals. Though Norton actually has good cafeteria food, I wont pay what they charge w/o the employee discount!

Megan,

From my experience, options are very limited in the immediate Kosair vicinity. My advice would be to put your husband in the car and send him to Main St and get carryout from BBC, Impellizeris, or Sol Aztecas. Or there are restaurants on Jefferson and Market. All just a couple minutes drive.

There was a Wall Street Deli in Jewish Hospital (at the Abraham Flexnor roundabout), but it is expensive and just not that good.

Best advice ... ask the nurses. They may have a secret gem or a favorite delivery service.

I hope your little one does well. On multiple occassions, I have been so thankful that we have a childrens hospital as good as Kosair in this city.

There is a City Cafe on Preston, open for lunch. http://www.citycafelunch.com/

There is a chicken place (Chicken King?) on East Broadway, maybe not walking distance, but a short drive.

And I think that Kosair provides a meal for the parents, at least they did when my son stayed there, 21 years ago. I think that was the last time I had McDonalds.

Megan,

I work for the company (Morrison) that provides the food at Norton Hospital, glad to hear that you like the cafeteria food!

While the prices pre-discount are aimed at what street level pricing elsewhere would be at a comparable venue I know it sucks to pay an upcharge.

Feel free to contact me off-line and I can probably hook you up at the employee price during your stay at Kosair. Hope it's nothing too serious.

Thanks Kurt! I work in one of the plaza buildings at Suburban so I eat there often. I always get the discount even though I don't work for them (wearing scrubs helps! But that's our secret, right?)
Thankfully it's just a tonsillectomy, but throw in that he's autistic, fairly non verbal and there are concerns he won't take pain meds by mouth, so that's why we'll be there for an extra day or two.
Btw.. I love Kosair! We are So lucky to have a hospital of this caliber in our back yard!

My son had two heart surgeries this year. Food while at Kosair was a MAJOR issue. I'm not willing to eat McDonalds, but willing to drive a bit, but not willing to go that far from my boy. We were staying there over a week at a time.

Come to the pig if you need, I'll give anyone whose kid is in Kosair a 15% discount. I haven't ok'ed this with Joe or Mikey, but honestly, if they're not down (they're probably down), I'll cover it myself. People with kids in a hospital need better food than Micky D's.
