Poll update: Who's got the best pizza now?

by Robin Garr » Thu May 19, 2011 12:16 pm

The arrival of Coals, not to mention DiOrio's and several other recent contenders, suggests another new poll, hoping to get an updated non-scientific sampling of opinion as to who's the local favorite now. Have at it, and pass the word, remembering that you must be registered in the forum and logged in to vote.

To keep the list within the 20 options permitted, I've excluded arguably delicious pizzas from places like Cafe Lou Lou and Caffe Classico, which aren't primarily pizzerias; I've excluded all chains. And I probably overlooked somebody important. That's what "Other" is for.

Feel free to embellish your vote with comments below. :)

Wow, that was painful. I'm glad I don't have to eat the same pizza every week :)

NABC is still my hands down champion. there's been shuffling in my my top spots behind them though.
I am the original Mike G, never mind the impostor.

I am kind of a big deal.

I don't really think I can choose just one. I like both Coal's (where I had lunch yesterday) and Papalino's (where I had lunch today) equally ,but for different reasons. Both have excellent versions of what they are trying to accomplish with their pie. The service at both places IMHO is very good as well.

Coal's reminds me a lot of the acclaimed Pizzeria Bianco in downtown Phoenix, AZ.
Pizza and atmosphere wise they are very similar. They both do few menu items but they do them very well. And even though they are 1500 miles apart, the dining rooms are almost laid out identically. It's the real deal good stuff in a classy environment.

Papalino's can hold it's own against ANY NYC pizza by the slice joint I've ever been to. If fact, if they were in NYC instead of the Highland's, the "It's only good in New York" snobbery would cease to exist. The quality of the pizza they maintain in that closet of a space (including the dark prep area in the basement) amazes me every time I walk in there. It's also a tremendous value. It's the last place I know of in town where you can have a nice lunch for 5 bucks.

I happen to feel the exact same way as Dan. Both Coal's and Papalino's are my favorite LOU pizza places presently. While both places do pizza differently, they both do it very very well. Now I am hungry for a slice...or a St. Matthews pie!

The whole point to polls like this is to force us to confront our dithery side, gut it out, put the chips down and play the hands we're dealt, to mix a metaphor. Can't choose just one? Nuh uh. Everyone can do it. But maybe we don't want to. That's okay, but it's different.

I agree with the choice difficulty... and the two are different enough that I will crave them at different times.

Coal's got my vote, though, as I could substitute it for Papalinos... if I'm in the mood for a big delicious slice of pizza (Papalinos/Spinellis) I can meet the need with Coal's.

If I want an "upscale" pizza with delicious toppings, Coal's would get my vote, even though Papalinos has unique and delightful toppings.

If I was still in college, or still went out to bars, Spinellis/Papalinos (whichever was stumbling distance from where I lived) would have won... with age comes maturity... or more severe hangovers... which are probably the same thing.

Like others is said it's a very difficult choice to make because there are so many different types of pies available in Louisville. I like several others voted for Coals because overall I enjoyed a combination of their pizza and atmosphere. That being said on any given day I may be in the mood for a different type of pizza which could include Wicks, Papalinos, Impellizeris or one of several others.

I voted for Impellizzeri's. An order of their breadsticks and a few slices of their Italian sausage pizza and I'm a happy guy.

But Papalino's and Coals are terrific. It's a good thing that there are so many different styles available.

Gattiland isn't an option, so I have to abstain.

Just to make a small interjection. I actually had the buffet pizza at Hometown Pizza in Middletown the other day for the first time and enjoyed it. It reminded me of what Pizza Hut used to be like back when I was a kid. At that time the only other options were Mario's, Pasquale's or Pizza King. It was very tasty!
We have entirely way too many pizza options. It's difficult for me to nail it down. You can pretty much satisfy any style of pizza craving you might have.... But that's not a bad thing.
I'm too wishy washy to commit to just ONE!

Well if I have to really choose one....This is the only pizza that I constantly crave on a regular basis....Sometimes my tastes are simple and this is comfort food to me. You can make fun of me if you want, but it's been an "Indiana tradition since 1956" . I like to describe it as the "White Castle of Pizza" It's like nothing else....

Dan, I've been to that same Hometown Pizza, and it also reminded me of what Pizza Hut pan pizza was like about 20 years ago.

I should also mention my single experience at Paplinos. After hearing so many good things, my wife and I stopped in for a large pie. First, they lost our pizza (?) so we had to order another, and we waited a total of about 1.5 hours to eat. I can forgive that. But I cannot forgive the lousy pizza. Is this the same pizza that other people are eating, and comparing to real NY pizza? My problem was with the crust. I found that Papalino's crust was WAY too thick (nearly an inch in some places), spongy, and totally flavorless. I liked the sauce, but the crust was just horrible. Against my better judgement, we took the rest of the pizza home... it became much improved the next day when I baked it at 500 degrees (on a pre-heated cookie sheet) for a few minutes. Did I just get an undercooked pizza? Should I go back?
