Sweet Surrender cranberry-walnut pie wins PETA recognition

by Robin Garr » Thu May 19, 2011 12:05 pm

NEWS RELEASE (edited)

Vegans love decadent desserts. With all the food choices free of meat, eggs and dairy products available, people who are concerned about animals, the environment, and their health have lots to choose from, including desserts.

With that in mind, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has announced its first ranking of the top five vegan pies from restaurants across the U.S. The Cranberry Walnut Pie from Louisville's Sweet Surrender Dessert Café earned fifth place.

In addition to pies, cakes, and other desserts, Sweet Surrender offers a lunch menu with several vegan options. All the café's desserts are made on the premises from scratch. Sweet Surrender has been honored with eight Best of Louisville awards and six LEO Readers' Choice awards.

Taking top honors in the PETA ranking was the Apple Crumb Pie à la Mode from Sublime in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The Chocolate Silk Peanut Butter Pie from Iowa City's Fair Grounds Coffeehouse was second. Rounding out the top five were the Banana Cream Pie from Lovin' Spoonfuls in Tucson, Ariz., and the Coconut Pie With Blood Orange Sauce from True Bistro in Somerville, Mass.

Thanks for posting this Robin! We were pretty excited.

Here's a photo of the pie:

We have the pie in the bakery now, as well as a vegan Green Tea Chocolate Cake and a small selection of our vegan cookies and cupcakes.

Glad to hear you've got a good pie and I hope you sell a ton of 'em but I could think of better organizations to receive an "award" from...Just MHO.

Hey guys...different strokes for different folks. Let's let Sweet Surrender bask in some well-deserved recognition, regardless of who they were recognized by. Hell, it isn't like the award came from Hitler, Bin Laden or some macro brewery.

As a certfied carnivore, and due to some of their tactics, PETA isn't too high on my list either. However, having enjoyed numerous tasty treats from Sweet Surrender, they are (high on "my list"). Congrats to Jessica and the entire SS crew.

Yeah, totally agree. It could have been something actively harmful, like getting a mention in the Courier-Journal or something.
