The Root Cellar - Locally Grown Farm Fresh Produce

About Us
The idea for The Root Cellar was born out of a desire to be part of the local food chain in an environmentally positive and socially conscientious way. I know that there are many ways to buy locally raised farm fresh products in Louisville, but I saw that there was a missing link in the food supply chain: the retail storefront. The Root Cellar has two main goals:

to provide only locally raised food.
to provide a retail food store in an underserved area (ie, a food desert)
The neighborhood of Old Louisville has been in need of a small, Mom and Pop retail store for many years. The people have longed for just such an new idea in retailing that The Root Cellar provides. We also are anxious to reach out to the other surrounding neighborhoods like California, Park Hill, Algonquin, Smoketown, Shelby Park, Limerick and Germantown, as well as, serve the University of Louisville and its unique blend of faculty, staff and students.

Many stores talk about locally source fresh produce, but The Root Cellar is %100 local, farm fresh produce. All of the products we sell are within a 150 mile radius of Louisville and this is good for our local economy. Local people buying local products—that’s the Kentucky Proud way!

The Root Cellar is a free-standing, retail produce store that sells local, farm raised produce of all varieties, including value added products like meats, cheeses, dairy, eggs, honey and maple syrup.

The core principle that guides the management philosophy of The Root Cellar is the simple focus on the food products. Food is the only focus of The Root Cellar. Good tasting, high quality, local and fresh— The Root Cellar is your Kentucky Proud retail market.

Primary Mission- To provide the highest quality, local, direct from the farm produce and value-added products to the Louisville Community.

Secondary Mission- To provide an alternative, healthy choice for food consumption to the people of the South End of Louisville (food desert).

Finally! The Root Cellar is open for business.

We just received our first shipment of beef and pork! Come check out Stone Cross Farm meats and cheese. You won’t be disappointed.

We just got in some beautiful, vine ripened tomatoes from Jackson’s Produce in Borden, IN. These babies smell so good–I think I’m going to eat up some of the inventory! It is still early in the growing season, but we will have frozen meats, cheeses, dairy, eggs, maple syrup, and honey over the coming days.

Strawberries and asparagus should be available soon. I will try to keep everyone posted through our Facebook account, so please friend The Root Cellar as soon as possible.

We have last season’s popcorn (good and dry and pops really big and tender!) and some beautiful Kentucky Limestone Bibb Lettuce (tender and tasty, too!). Kenny’s Cheese and JD Country milk are also available now!

Our Grand Opening Celebration is scheduled for May 21st (next weekend already!). Stop by (rain or shine!-we have a 4000 sq. ft. covered pavilion to shelter you). Further details to come so keep checking the website.

Whoa, I like it, like it a lot! Sort of a cross between Paul's and a farmers' market under roof?

My husband and I stopped by tonight on our usual evening stroll and bought some milk. Very friendly owner, great looking produce, meat, honey, cheese, etc. I'm beyond thrilled that this is in the Old Louisville neighborhood, so often overlooked.

Sorry to derail this into a CJ rant but - I saw pictures of this place on the CJ website. Mayor Fischer was there and it looked great but here's the rant - no where accompanying these photos was there any info about the place itself nor a link to an article with that information so not surprised at all that the article is incomplete.

I went in and checked the place out last week. Loved it! Friendly owner, and lovely foods. We picked up some popcorn on the cob, strawberries, bison bratwurst, squash, and strawberry kefir. Everything was wonderful, especially that kefir!

A group of us hit the two Bardstown Road Farmers Markets and the Root Cellar on Saturday. We went to the Root Cellar after an early lunch, and I think it had been well visited before we arrived. Seemed like a low supply on the fresh veggies and fruits (don't think I saw an fruit actually), but plenty of meats and dairy. I am going to return during the week to see if the inventory is greater then. Really need to figure out when the deliveries come in, although I bet they are scattered throughout the week.

I had lower expectations given the recent newspaper article (which was front and center on the web). Do look forward to returning soon.

On a related note, I was very impressed with the Douglass Loop Farmers Market. Got there right at the 10am start time. Much more roomy than the Deer Park market. They both have strengths and there's room in the marketplace for both of them. That said, I really liked this new market.

Lauren, I really like the kefir, too :-) I bought the strawberry, and now I'm excited to try raspberry. :)
