Heart of Kentucky Bourbon and BBQ Festival this weekend

by Steve P » Mon May 16, 2011 1:45 pm

Looking for something to do this weekend ? Here's a cool festival not far from town.

http://www.visitlebanonky.com/bourbonbbq.html

Our BBQ team, The Rolling Bones, will be kicking off our "Drinkin' in the Driveway" tour at this event. We're generally busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest until after the final turn in at 1:30pm on Saturday...but after that we've usually got time for a little socializin'. If anyone makes it out here on Saturday afternoon stop by and say "howdy"...Might be able to find ya some amateur expert "Q" to sample.

I'll bet the meat will just be "Rolling" off the "Bones".

All I can say is that if it does...We won't win. Tough competition this weekend...lots of experienced cooks.

Heh...didn't see this before I just posted a question about the International BBQ Fest in Owensboro last weekend.

Were you there? How does it compare to the Lebanon event?

Jeff,

I'm not too familiar with the springtime festival in Owensboro. There is not a KCBS sanctioned event associated with this particular celebration, I'm guessing it is more of a Chamber of Commerce thing involving local restaurants. I have been told it gets a little rowdy there in the spring.

There is a KCBS sanctioned contest in Owenboro in (I believe) late Sept or early Oct...again, I haven't paid to much attention because it's not on our tour this year.

Not sure how this thing in Lebanon is set up...It certainly LOOKS like a nice "small town" thing from what I've been able to gather. There will be 28 teams cooking down there, many of them are long time veterans of the competition trail, so I'm thinking this will be a tough compettion. They DO have some vendors set up to cook the event, I don't know who it will be, so I can't comment on the prices or quality.

I would love to experience this Steve! Even tip a cold one after you finish your shift. Unfortunately weekends are no longer mine! Good luck to you!

Thanks Madeline. If the planets align, we'll try and drop you off some "Q" on our way home Saturday evening. We'll have to hand it to you at the back door though...Trust me, after hovering over a Cherry wood fire for two days, you won't want folks smelling like us in your restaurant.

OK, how did you do?

My wife and I dropped by, met your other half, but she said you were too busy drinking at the main tent to meet your fans!

Andrew,

On a serious note, I was VERY disappointed to have missed you and your wife. I was freaking exhausted after the last turn in and took my leave to go pick up a bag of ice and enjoy the air conditioning (and a frosty swill beer) in the local establishment...I was only gone for 25 minutes but alas that was when you stopped by to visit. I very much regret that I wasn't on hand to greet you and provide copious samples of our wares. Hopefully we have the opportunity to make up for said social faux pas at a later time.

NOW...just so everyone knows....That repeated dull thumping noise you heard from your back porch on Saturday about 4:30pm was the sound of several KCBS judges putting their collective feet in our ass. To say we screwed this one up would be a VERY mild understatement. I have no excuses to offer and throw my amateur expert soul into the jaws of whoever wants to take the first shot. My lovely bride (bless her heart) ALWAYS tells me that a competition is NEVER the time to spring something "new" (be it recipe or technique)...But do you think I ever (ever !!!) listen ?.....Nooooooooooo, of course not. So this was just another in a lonnnnnng list of examples of beer and (what passes for) testosterone getting in the way.

For those that care....I underwent quadruple "judges foot-removal-from-ass" surgery today and the wounds already appear to be healing nicely. I am hoping for a full recovery in time to enjoy doing it again in Jeffersonville next month.

That sounds like painful surgery! I least hope you didn't give the judges their feet back!
