Blue Dog Tapas

by Mark Head » Fri May 13, 2011 2:43 pm

I don't recall seeing much on the forum regarding Tapas Night at Blue Dog Bakery. Last night was our first chance to get over there and check out the evening options. They've always been high on my lunch list - but the tapas takes the place to a whole new level as far as I'm concerned.

Favorites were stuffed squid, artisan ham platter, arugula salad with apple, nuts, goat cheese, and several pizza options. How about toasted baguette topped with house made bacon, Maytag blue cheese, and maple syrup - wow. Lot's of beer and wine choices. We will be fighting the crowd to get back very very soon.

This was my report from last month.

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=15031&p=120419&hilit=+blue#p120419

I'll make this short and sweet; go as soon as possible. The food and beer are fantastic. I'm not a wine person, so all I can say about the wine is that they have it. I'd guess they have around 30 bottles. The only thing that needs improvement is the service. It's not bad, but could use some work.

Below is what we tried. They were all great with the blue cheese/bacon bruschetta and the pizza being the standouts. It gets my vote for best pizza crust in Louisville.

They open at 7:00 (Thur-Sat), fill up fast and turn few tables; so get there very early.

Bruschetta - $4

Pear, Manchego, Bellota Ham, Wildflower Honey
Lardo, Black Pepper, Arugula
Hogs Head Cheese, Chopped Pickle, Black Pepper
Maytag Blue Cheese, House Bacon, Maple Syrup

Pizza - $12
Egg, House Cured Bacon, Arugula

 I must have slept through those reports - I would have been sooner.

It struck us that the service is a touch disorganized - but the set up seems to encourage people to sort of park for a couple hours anyway.

The service, or lack of, was so bad on our first trip, we left before eating. It was better on our second trip, but far from good. I wish they would open before 7:00 to avoid the sudden dinner rush onslaught.

The proprieters making your tapas are also the ones making the bread. I swear his passion for excellent food has him not sleeping at all! And knowing the level of cleanliness he prides himself on he probably doesn't leave the bakery untill 11pm or later. He's already burning the candle at both ends. And he's gotta feed the pigs! Those hours of operation are very well planned out for their busy schedule I'd wager.

The 7:00 opening is the main reason I haven't tried it yet, I'm just an early eater.
