The first rule of 'Shine club is there is no 'Shine club....

by Brian Taylor Clark » Wed May 11, 2011 3:35 pm

Well it seems that these good 'ol boys are gettin creative with the flavors of the White Lightning these days. I haven't gotten to partake in any of them yet but I may have some strawberry waiting for me. I've heard of Watermelon, grape, apple. Just seeing if anyone has sipped some of these flavored moonshines, and your thoughts about them....

I've tried the Strawberry, Lemonade, and Mint Julip from MB Roland at a tasting at Westport Whiskey last week and they were pretty good.

Apple Pie "shine" is not made with illegal distilled product, but a cocktail made with 190 proof neutral grain spirit. Putting a mixed drink in a mason jar does not moonshine make.

Somewhere underneath my bar is a jar of "free range" whiskey that was infused with peaches for a couple of months. A couple of friends really go for it (which is probably the only reason it's still under there, otherwise I woulda tossed it)...Just not my cup of tea.

ive got some family 'back east' (eastern KY), that make their own ahem... distilled neutral spirits. in addition to the 'springwater' they also make a mean honeysuckle 'wine' thats about 100 proof, is delicious, and will lull the uninitiated into a false sense of security and then mysteriously deposit them, unconscious, onto the porch at the foot of the cut stump chair they were sipping it on. ive seen it happen multiple times

Nice. Do they ever make 'mater-shine or melon-shine? The fruit is added to the mash prior to the ferment and "cooking". It really makes a smooth product.

My Grandfather was a home cook back east, upstate NY, during prohibition. His still was made by a coppersmith and has the traditional onion-dome top. You can see it on display in the BBC Taproom on the Beer Corner of Clay and Main downtown. AKA Clay Street Live!

I once had Prickly Pear Moonshine. It tasted like what I imagine paint thinner would taste like. Not for the faint of heart!
